Empty Lots
In this essay, we argue that all the empty lots in Thousand Palms are being used only for trash when they can be used for something important such as gardens. There are at least three empty lots in each street in the city. What we are trying to do is import at least one garden for each street to increase the amount of healthy foods in the city. By adding these gardens, it could decrease the obesity rate and possibly the death rate. We think that the citizens of Thousand Palms would agree with taking out empty lots and help with the cost of the healthy foods and clean out the empty lots. We will need the support from the City Council in order to plant food for the people, to use the empty lots we need a permit to avoid getting fined. We are doing to help the families who do not have money to buy food and to …show more content…
After gaining their support we will put up banners all around the city to see if people would like to help dig out all of the empty lots and help plant many healthy vegetables for them and people in need. We will then arrange a meeting for the whole city at a park or in a theater, most likely a big and public place. We will then introduce our idea to plant gardens in empty lots and help and hope to gain their agreement. After gaining their agreement, we will arrange certain days to go through all the streets and clean them all up and clean the empty lots. Next we will buy as many vegetables and foods to plant as we can get. Then we will plant them all and have a daily routine as to where we water the plants at least two times a day. We will continue this routine for a year and record our improvements and will ask the people how they feel about this organization that we have made. After many years that have passed, we will show the government our big impact and maybe they will take our advice and spread the gardens all over the

In this article, the author talks about how Albina Ruiz was worried about her communities health and environmental status because of all the pollution from people throwing out their waste into the streets, rivers, and empty lots.…

I would switch from a standard asphalt based lot to something more porous. My research did not yield much in results but a standard old fashioned Gravel lot would allow water to seep in to the ground as it normally would while passing through not chemically treated stone that are not harmful to the environment. This is an idea I would create a research and development team for and I would help pioneer a new way to park that would be safe for the city and would improve the quality of life for the patrons living near my stores. I would also create a specific area that was shielded from the rain for my pawn products as not to deposit any harmful chemicals in to the ground that would affect the drinking water.…

Orientalism, simply put, is the perception the West has of the East. The concept was mapped out by Edward Said in his book Orientalism, where he explores the concept, its origin, and how it functions. Said states that Orientalism is "the corporate institution for dealing with the Orient - dealing with it by making statements about it, authorizing views of it, describing it, by teaching it, settling it, [and] ruling over it" (3). However, Said points out that even if Orientalism from the beginning was not "a creation with no corresponding reality" the concept he studies in the book is that of "the internal consistency of Orientalism and its ideas about the Orient ... despite or beyond any correspondence" with the "real" Orient (5). What Said is saying is that the characteristics drawn up about the Orient within Orientalism ar not necessarily compatible with reality. The Western eagerness to characterize the Oriental came from the desire to put a face to the unknown, becoming "a political vision of reality whose structure promoted the difference between" East and West, them and us, "the familiar and the strange" (43). Orientalism became a dictionary displaying the characteristics of the Oriental subject, characteristics that were fixed and unchangeable (42, 70).…

They organization has a positive impact on the communities they engage through their community involvement and free programs. This is the ultimate purpose of civic engagement. The gardens provide people in the neighborhoods with a place to meet, create new hobbies and even receive free healthy food. The garden at St. Simon’s episcopal Church, for example, yielded 500 pounds of free food for the community in its first year. This gave many people who cannot afford fresh produce from supermarkets access to nutritious ingredients. From leading kids in Grub Club, I saw that kids and parents progressively took the new knowledge and incorporated it into their routines. We always began Grub Club by talking about what we ate for breakfast and dinner and whether or not ewe exercised. At the beginning of the week, children and parents would admit that they had not neaten enough fruits and vegetables. They would also admit that they had not exercised. As the week progressed, more and more children would share stories of having eaten healthier meals with their families and the ways they tried to fit e ways they tried to fit exercise into their schedules. Although this organization aims to cultivate healthy eating habits in neighborhoods where healthy food is scarce, it is also fostering a sense of community among residents. In Echo park, Seeds…

Solutions to the problems I have outlined in my essay are voting factory farming out of certain areas, stopping the consumption of animal products, and proposing laws that would be a little more strict on the fast food industry. An individual can stop him or herself from purchasing animal products in order to atleast try and not be part of the reason for why so many animals get slaughtered and are raised in factory farms. As a community, residents can come together and vote against industrial farming in their counties to stop the number of factory farms from increasing and preventing airborne sickness from getting to them. The government can also be part of the solution to these problems that take place because of industrial farming by creating laws that prevent the cruel treatment of slaughter animals while being raised. Creating laws that improve the sanitation in the environment animals are forced to live in in order to prevent sickness would also be part of the…
