ENDOCRINE DISRUPTORS AND HOW THEY AFFECT EVERYTHING
“Our Stolen Future” by Theo Colborn is about the health and environmental threats created by man-made chemical contaminants that interfere with hormones in humans and wildlife. In this paper i’ll explain what is an endocrine system, what are endocrine disruptors, and how endocrine disruptors affect humans.
The endocrine system includes all of the glands of the body and the hormones produced by those glands. The glands are controlled directly by stimulation from the nervous system as well as by chemical receptors in the blood and hormones produced by other glands. By regulating the functions of organs in the body, these glands help to maintain the body’s homeostasis. Cellular metabolism, reproduction, sexual development, sugar and mineral homeostasis, heart rate, and digestion are the few among them that are regulated by the actions of hormones. The reason why the endocrine system is important is because it influences almost every cell, organ, and function of our body. This system can be harmed in many ways but the worst is the endocrine disruptors.
Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that may interfere with the body’s endocrine system and produce immune effects in both humans and wildlife. A wide range of substances, both natural and man-made, are thought to cause endocrine disruption, including pharmaceuticals, DDT and other pesticides. It is said that endocrine disruptors can affect wildlife such as animals. Research actually shows that endocrine disruptors may pose the greatest risk to the offsprings of the animals affected. They show symptoms like biological deformities.
Humans are the ones that are getting affected seriously by the endocrine disruptors. They cause birth defects, and other developmental disorders. It can also cause breast cancer, prostate cancer, thyroid and other cancers in the body. Humans are usually exposed to these chemicals when they are using
