Enduring Self Research Paper
For this first essay, you have two options. Pick only one of them:Option 2: Define and explain the three views of the enduring self, and why the question matters in philosophy and in life (minimum 500 words).
The enduring self is a situation where we as individuals believe that we are the same person today as we were ten years ago. There are many different situations that will arise at times during our lives that may change us. With this view there comes several different views of this specific problem. These views include the body as the enduring self, the soul as the enduring self, the memory as the enduring self, or even the view of there being no view of the enduring self.
The first view of the enduring self is the body. As we grow,

Unlike the body, the soul we are unable to see, touch, smell and so forth. Since we are unable to see and experience the soul physically, the soul does not change because it is not a physical material part of the body. The only issue is that there is no way to monitor if the soul does or does not change throughout life. As we physically change our appearance and experience the different experiences in life, we are unable to see our soul. How, if possible, does it change? What can change our soul? Since we are not being able to determine the answer to these questions, it is best to say that our soul does not change based on physical changes.
The view of the memory being the enduring self is also another option that has arised. When the memory is the focus of the view of the enduring self it is about focusing on the past events in life. A problem with this view is that we are not always conscious of the events that have occurred in our lives. We like to think that we can remember everything that has ever happened to us, but we are not always able to do that with how our brains are set up with the short term and long term memory.
Another view of the enduring self is that there is no view of the enduring self. Here, in the view that there is no view of the enduring self, the individual does not exist. This view is all about the beliefs. The beliefs of an individual ultimately alter this specific

Many people; especially philosophers find themselves contradicting with the subject matter known as ‘SELF’. What is the actually and truthful definition of the word itself and does it change or not? If it does change, then who can truly experience and notice it? Among many philosophers, Hume confidently states that personal identity depends on three relations of such as resemblance, contiguity and causation.…

Another key way in which a person gains a better concept of their self is the shift from a remembering self to a remembered self. Engel explains the first part of this equation to gaining a better self-concept when he says, “The remembering self is always a person in a specific situation, remembering for a particular reason”(196). The explanation of the remembering self-sets up why a person wants to get a remembered self. A person in the remembering self-stage must be exposed to a situation that reminds them of the past in order to recollect and connect with the…

All my life I have searched for outdoor profession involving human remains and settlements that could satisfy my curiosity. Then, I met a person that is so dedicated to such a profession that I had no knowledge about. As to knowing her since I have been under her wing for two years, I could say that she is a very skillful person in the field of archaeology. Her name is Jolie Liston, from Texas, a 7th generation Texan. All her life since age 23, has been doing archaeology because she loved doing outside work. Now age 53 and has achieved her Ph.D. on this type of field (Liston2/7/13,Liston2/12/13). With the 2 years of work and training with her, I finally made a hard decision because I had two choices, be in the military or outdoor profession which I wanted. With all her lectures and teachings about archaeological dig and investigating past histories, my interest grew more and captured me right there. I would say that Jolie is nothing compared to others out there. There are great accomplishments that she accomplished in Palau before she left the island. All based on her discoveries on field were publicized and taught to the people, also helped with preserving some of the very old cultural sites. With the archaeology skill she possesses, I have been inspired to walk the same path and start out by going to higher education to pursue a future field goal.…

We elaborated “self” or what is really the meaning of “self”. When someone ask you to describe yourself, we just say our name, age, gender, where we live, our personal attributes and characteristics and so on and so forth. Those are only references of who we are, but the true nature of self is when we get rid of those references. When self encounters reality or experience, we tend to wonder of who we really are, we keep on searching for answers. We search of what will make us happy and search for the truth, because we have the freedom to decide and transform it into meaningful moments or events and translated it into concepts or images. Then we ritualize that concepts and re-interpret it as we cherish that moment until it becomes meaningful and value that result. A concrete example is attending Liturgical mass every Sunday. This cycle can be destroy be issues so we must be responsible and do what is right.…

The way that a person is able to achieve this more cohesive self is by taking into consideration that part of an individual’s personality that deals with spirituality, which was mentioned earlier. This spiritual side of a person or as some describes it as the "higher", "deeper", or "transpersonal" self is seen as a source of wisdom, inspiration, unconditional love, and the will to meaning in our lives (Kelder, 1993).…
