Between The Flags & Sky High
How have the composers of the two of the texts you have studied explored aspects of
‘identity’ that you have found interesting? In your response, refer closely to the techniques that have been employed to convey particular aspects. The concepts of identity. !

!

The composers engaged me by incorporating self identity as an aspect in their texts by reinforcing the character’s surroundings and childhood. Hannah Robert’s short story ‘Sky High’ effectively expresses this theme through her colourful use of figurative devices. Similarly, Jayce White’s short film ‘Between the Flags’ conveys aspects of youth culture through character commonalities. !

!

One’s idea of self can change overtime, but the realisation of this can happen within an instant.
The persona’s reflection begins with a vivid memory of the washing line, ’the best climbing tree in the backyard’, which was now bare. The contrast shows the progression of time and a change of outlook from the use of metaphoric language to a blunt statement. Robert continues to reminisce in abstract language incorporating symbolism of her freedom whilst she is swinging on the washing line ‘as the earth spins below’. This juxtaposes to her sense of self in present time where she feels
‘there are too many things tying me down’. !

!

Utilising pathetic fallacy, ‘an older more age-warped washing line’ becomes the manifestation of her ‘line-etched story of life in scars and wrinkles’. She depicts the backyard as dull and baron, much like her present self. Disappointment overshadows the vivid memories of her childhood, despite the urge to reconnect with her youth. !

!

White’s short film also portrays aspects of youth as a commonality between cultural identities. The film begins with a double entendre of the title ‘Between the Flags’ which asserts the conflict between two cultures. White incorporates stereotypes to distinguish the obvious differences. The bulldogs jersey is a common symbol associated

In the reading selection “Metaphors We Live By” by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, the authors convey that metaphors are used on a daily basis by people like you and I. Some metaphors we use are easier to spot and understand than others. With metaphors there is a shifting in meaning between words or phrases by analogy or by comparison, through this we are shown likeness in the words we did not expect. Metaphors are infused in the lyrics of today music, famous rappers and singers use them to make example of people or places. I”ve found metaphors to be used in sports by athletes and sportscasters. Literature of the present and past are full of metaphors that draw you into the book or story you are reading.…

The composer reminisces of the simple joys of life experienced as a child and the magical significance in a child’s eyes of inanimate objects. “The best climbing tree stood proud on a small mound of concrete, festooned with socks and knickers” she is imaging the tree as a place of happy thoughts, were she could reminisce her childhood memories. Whereas “ today however it is bare” and like reality is dark and harsh. “It is an older more age-warped washing line” the narrator feels that she no longer can be that little girl that once climbed the washing line. The hyperbole of Sky High is a metaphor of her naivety of the way she perceived the world to be as she believes as an adult “there are too many things tying me to the…

During the nineteenth century, the issue of identity started to become worrisome in United States where a new group of emigrants were trying to clarify themselves in an unknown place far away from their family’s ancestral homes (Kroger, 2004). Thus, self-identity is influenced by the course of time and place. Late adolescences and adults rejected the Christian dogma during the Victorian Era as they came out with morality could survive without religion (Kroger, 2004). Therefore, Victorian adolescents had to form their adulthood identities without a proper guideline because of cultural uncertainty. From the perspective of socio-cultural, adolescents find out their self-definition with the sense of freedom. Frankie had the desire to get out from the control of the family and other socio-cultural settings that restricts herself (Kroger, 2004). The settings include the social class, ethnicity, technological and normative influences for…

She stands upin the garden where she has been working and looks into the distance. She has sensed a shift in the weather. There is another gust of wind, a buckle of noise in the air, and the tall cypresses sway. She turns and moves uphill towards the house, climbing over a low wall, feeling the first drops of rain on her bare arms. She crosses the loggia and quickly enters the house. In the kitchen she doesn’t pause but goes through…

The article by Lakoff and Johnson is intriguing and delectable in terms of “food for thought.” The reality check of how daily lives and culture are affected by adopting metaphors into daily and common speech without even noticing how significantly metaphors play in peoples lives is preeminent. Metaphors such as (“Food for Thought, Killing Two Birds With One Stone, and Bouncing Off the Walls”) are a few examples of metaphors that are used in common speech and are used in junction with daily life without notice.…

‘The afternoon silence’, in the first line, depicts her monotonous, oppressed life while ‘the edges of light’ represents her desires and dreams, similar to the one she just had. Hence, ‘In the afternoon silence, (laced with edges of light)’ proves that her life was lackluster to such a great extent that glimpses of her dream world were the only source of hope she held onto. The sibilance in ‘silence’ amplifies the never ending, dreary effect. ‘Laced’ symbolizes the fragility and meagerness of her dreams or source of hope. The fact that ‘her children curled into the warmth of her’ during this time period and woke her up from her dream, portrays that they were the link between her dreary reality and desired fantasy.…

She switched on her iPod and plugged in the earphones to drown out the noise from the highway and started jogging towards the hill. The early rays from the rosy fingered dawn bounced off her sun-bleached, wavy hair as they flowed in waves, wrapped around her waist. The beautiful morning adorned her glowing porcelain skin. At the foot of the hill, she bent down and took off her shoes and lifted her skirt up to her knees and started walking up the hill in the cold, early morning. She looked up at the sky with her eager black eyes and reduced her pace, enjoying the touch of the dew gathered, plush grass under her bare feet. Reaching the top of the hill, she took out her diary and sat down. Her toes were painted bright red and her feet were tapping to Ray La montage’s ‘Empty’ playing on her iPod and her rosy soft lips singing along. This was her routine. She came up here every morning just to get away from everything for a change. She would write in her diary and see the birds, the little squirrels and the ladybugs and wished to be as free as them or have wings so she could fly and get away from this city, she wished she could stay there forever, taking in the breathtaking dawn. But every day she had to sadly return back to her ordinary life. Where she was a nobody, was only eighteen but she felt like she had been trapped in that body and town for…
