In the reading selection “Metaphors We Live By” by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, the authors convey that metaphors are used on a daily basis by people like you and I. Some metaphors we use are easier to spot and understand than others. With metaphors there is a shifting in meaning between words or phrases by analogy or by comparison, through this we are shown likeness in the words we did not expect. Metaphors are infused in the lyrics of today music, famous rappers and singers use them to make example of people or places. I”ve found metaphors to be used in sports by athletes and sportscasters. Literature of the present and past are full of metaphors that draw you into the book or story you are reading.
In sports when a game is intense and hard fought, the phrase “it was a hard battle” is often used. In football Some players refer themselves and the opposing players as “soldiers”. The game itself is often called a “war”, and players are called courageous for performing well under pressure. From the comparison you can conclude that the metaphor “football Is War” can be applied. This type of metaphor is a sensitive one to use in the sports world. After September 11 Espn a world wide leader in sports has refrained from using such comparison to any of the sports being analyzed. …show more content…
The music industry is filled with lyricists, and writers playing with words to compose songs, that they hope will captivate our attention.
One of my favorite lines in a rap song is “Im cooler to a polar bears toe nails.”(Andre 300, ATLiens)
In This song The raper compares his persona’s coolness and to that of the arctic chill felt by a polar bears toe nails. Tupac Shakur a famous raper wrote a song called “Me & My Girlfriend”, Tupac Compares his gun to his
girlfriend:
“No control, down to roll, unleash. After a hit you break apart, then back to one piece. Much love to my one and only girlfriend, the world is ours. Just hold me down, baby witness the power. Never leave a nigga alone, I love you black or chrome. Turn this house into a happy home, me and my girlfriend.” Tupac also uses references to “bonnie and clyde” to demonstrate the love and loyalty between him and his gun.
One Famous writer know for his usage of metaphors, is Englishman William Shakespeare. Shakespeare used a form of metaphor called an Extended Metaphor. In Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliette”, Romeo compares his love Juliette to the sun. “But soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the East, and Juliet is the sun! Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief.”(Romeo and Juliet, Act 2, scene ii). Metaphors can be found in poetry as well. In “The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe, he compares Eyes to fire stating the are the same. "To the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom’s core.” These metaphors by the writers help give a more visual explanation to their literature.
In conclusion, George Lakoff and Mark Johnson are correct when they say that metaphors are a part of everyday life. Metaphors can be found in any many different forms, and applied to various aspects of life. Sports, music, and literature use them to draw your attention. Metaphors can be in its easiest form, or can be hard to catch, nonetheless a metaphor it is. The question is will you catch it? Or will it drift away without being noticed.
