Analyzing a Film; The Lord of The Ring: The Fellowship of The Ring

Introduction I have chosen to analyze the film The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring (2001). This film won 4 Academy Awards and received 13 nominations including Best Picture. I will be analyzing the summary/history, genre, two scenes that explain why this film has been put into this specific genre, and one scene that pushes the genre to the extreme.
Summary/History
The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of The ring is the first instalment of an Epic trilogy and was written by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens. Peter Jackson also directed the film. The film was released December 19, 2001and the main actors/actresses include Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins), Ian Holm (Bilbo Baggins), Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), Sean Astin (Samwise 'Sam ' Gamgee), Liv Tyler (Arwen), Orlando Bloom (Legolas Greenleaf), Billy Boyd (Peregrin (Pippin) Took), Dominic Monaghan (Meriadoc (Merry) Brandybuck), and Sean Bean (Boromir). (1990-2014 IMDb.com). The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of The ring is about a little hobbit, who has never left his home in the Shire. Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) is set on an adventure after he is left a very special ring by his uncle Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm) to ultimately destroy it. Throughout his quest, he is joined by eight friends/allies such as, Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Aragon (Viggo Mortensen), Samwise (Sam) Gamgee (Sean Astin), Arwen (Liv Tyler), Legolas Greenleaf (Orlando Bloom), Billy Boyd (Peregrin (Pippin) Took), Meriadoc (Merry) Brandybuck (Dominic Monaghan), and Boromir (Sean Bean). (1990-2014 IMDb.com) Along the journey, these eight friends encounter countless dangerous events that test their courage, strength, and loyalty.

    The prologue, spoken by Galadriel, shows the Dark Lord Sauron forging the One Ring in order to conquer the lands of Middle-earth. A Last Alliance of Elves and Men is formed to counter Sauron's forces at the foot of Mount Doom, but Sauron kills Elendil, the High King of Men. His son, Prince Isildur grabs Elendil's broken sword Narsil, and slashes at Sauron's hand, separating him from the Ring and vanquishing his army. However, because Sauron's "life force" is bound to the Ring, he is not completely defeated until the Ring itself is destroyed. Isildur takes the Ring and succumbs to its temptation, refusing to destroy it. He is later ambushed and killed by orcs, and the Ring is lost in a river. The Ring is found by the creature Gollum thousands of years later, who takes it underground for five centuries, giving him "unnaturally long life."     The novel The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R Tolkien is set in a fanciful world filled with strange creatures and magical happenings, but not everything is so unlike our world. Many of the characters change over the course of the story, just as we do over the course of our lives. Frodo, the main character and the carrier of the magical ring, is part of the mythical race of Hobbits, yet he is remarkably human. He has the same values as we do, and his small size hides his big heart. His journey throughout the novel changes his life and his outlook on life. In the beginning he is content with his quiet life, and his voyage leaves him lusting after adventure. Of all the characters, however, I believe that the most realistic one is Aragorn. He grew up knowing that one day he would have to step up and become king of the land, but he didn’t want to be a ruler. He had heard the story of how the aura of the magical ring had poisoned the mind of his ancestor, and Aragorn did not want to meet the same fate. Aragorn was terrified of the powerful and evil ring, and so he fled into the forest, leaving his fate and his rank behind. By the end of the novel he realizes that he must become the king to save the country, and he accepts his role without complaint.
