I agree with you that engaged listening is a necessary skill to facilitate cultural competence. It also shows genuine care and interest. Being aware of how listening looks to people of other cultures is important. For instance leaning forward and eye contact may show one culture that you are listening, whereas leaning in and turning an ear to someone of another culture shows that person that you are listening (Giger, 2013). Being respectful to cultural differences will help build a therapeutic relationship. I believe that developing good communication skills should be a priority for healthcare providers to build therapeutic relationships with culturally diverse patients. Do you agree?

    The importance of cultural competency when working with diverse populations in health care can affect a patients or clients overall health in a positive or negative way and also affect reputation of the doctor and the staff. In the article Cultural Competency: Values, Traditions and Effective Practices, by Carol Brannon she defines Cultural competency, as “the ability to understand and respond effectively to the cultural and linguistic needs of patients or clients”(p.2).     Communication misunderstandings can negatively affect the patient’s health, but when a patient feels comfortable and understood it promotes better communication between healthcare practitioner and patient resulting in a positive healthcare experience for all involved.
