Life is a precious thing that should be taken seriously. Suicide is a horrible mistake that many don’t realize when there seems to be no other way out. People often take to jumping off bridges such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco or the Coronado Bridge in San Diego to commit suicide. To the public this act of violence cannot be taken lightly. As humans we naturally don’t like to hear about those committing suicide, and would much rather it not be an issue. This brings the subject of prevention to the table.
Engineers building the bridge are much concerned with the safety of the people utilizing it. Safety is one of the most important issues while constructing, if not the most important. However, what about the safety of those that are using the bridge for unsafe intentions? Bridge builders have a responsibility of the safety of everyone on the bridge and should design it to keep everyone on it. When an engineer has the capability of building a structure that can be potentially harmful to those that utilize it in the wrong way, preventative measures should be taken into account. Some would ask if the engineer has the right to interfere with someone’s free will? If they want to kill themselves then why can someone take preventative measures to stop them? I see it as the engineer protecting the integrity and reputation of their work. I can imagine the last thing they would want of their creation would be it becoming known as a tool for suicide. Engineers design safety precautions and preventative measures with other things such as lawn mowers, construction equipment, manufacturing machines and robots, etc… These devices have shut off modes that trigger when utilized in the wrong way to keep users safe. Safety measures should be taken into account with larger scale items as well.
Many people would argue that a person that is determined to commit suicide is going to do it not matter what.
