Engineers Duty to Prevent Suicide

Final Exam
Life is a precious thing that should be taken seriously. Suicide is a horrible mistake that many don’t realize when there seems to be no other way out. People often take to jumping off bridges such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco or the Coronado Bridge in San Diego to commit suicide. To the public this act of violence cannot be taken lightly. As humans we naturally don’t like to hear about those committing suicide, and would much rather it not be an issue. This brings the subject of prevention to the table.
Engineers building the bridge are much concerned with the safety of the people utilizing it. Safety is one of the most important issues while constructing, if not the most important. However, what about the safety of those that are using the bridge for unsafe intentions? Bridge builders have a responsibility of the safety of everyone on the bridge and should design it to keep everyone on it. When an engineer has the capability of building a structure that can be potentially harmful to those that utilize it in the wrong way, preventative measures should be taken into account. Some would ask if the engineer has the right to interfere with someone’s free will? If they want to kill themselves then why can someone take preventative measures to stop them? I see it as the engineer protecting the integrity and reputation of their work. I can imagine the last thing they would want of their creation would be it becoming known as a tool for suicide. Engineers design safety precautions and preventative measures with other things such as lawn mowers, construction equipment, manufacturing machines and robots, etc… These devices have shut off modes that trigger when utilized in the wrong way to keep users safe. Safety measures should be taken into account with larger scale items as well.
Many people would argue that a person that is determined to commit suicide is going to do it not matter what.

I feel it is a person’s choice and it is different than suicide. It has to be well thought out and talked about with a team of people involved including physicians, psychologists, and family. I also think it is based more on the person’s quality of life and their decision or choice should be honored. It’s not the same as suicide caused by a mental illness. This is not a well thought out plan and does not occur with a team of people.…

Unfortunately, the families of those people remain unaware of the suicidal attempts as those persons typically decide to remain quiet about their depression. This, however, affects me drastically as I not only constantly worry about their well being, but I also feel helpless when trying to comfort them. Particularly for young people, depression in an individual remains unknown until it is too late. Therefore, to prevent more suicides, the immediate response is to make sure the individuals are not left alone so that they are not able to self-harm themselves. Likewise, seeking professional help and letting those closest to that person know what is happening is another step towards combatting depression and lowering suicide…

Suicide. Just the mentioning of such a word sends shivers down many people’s spines. While it may be not be spoken about, suicide rates seem to be on the rise, and many are doing everything they can to help. According to Pamela Kulbarsh, a psychiatric nurse for over twenty-five and writer of the article “The Epidemiology of Suicide: Who is most likely to take their life own life?” suicide has been coined “the most preventable death” (7). Deciding that I will influence John to search for alternatives to suicide stems from my personal values on life. If John were to tell me he just found out he is terminally ill, has 6 months to live, and is seriously considering ending his life, I would encourage him to take a second and take it all in. John could be possibly acting on emotions and may change his mind after thinking and talking it over. As a social worker I can not promote any particular means to end one’s life, however, I should be open to the idea of the issues and care options. In addition, I am free to or not to participate in end-of-life discussions or assisted suicide discussions (Chapter 11, slide 9).…

The solution is love. As corny as it sounds, love is the solution to nearly every social related problem. The biggest cause for suicide is depression. The source of this depression can come from many things. The best solution to this is to spread love. Show compassion and sympathize with those who are at an all-time low. Show them that there are people in this world that care about them. They should never have to resort to physician assisted suicide, or even suicide in general. If the world spread a little more love, there would be a lot more life in today’s society. If every person at risk of suicide had the world backing them up, then they would be well aware of suicide being the wrong choice.…

Real or fictional characters think suicide is the only answer to their problems these days. Suicide is a major issue among all people but mostly teens in the world today. When suicide is discussed in school or anywhere else people take it very seriously because they will at least know two people that are thinking about attempting it. Most adults commit suicide when they are going through hard times, or stress. “You have a choice. Live or die. Every breath is a choice. Every minute is a choice. To be or not to be” said by Chuck Palahniuk. The quote means you have a choice either you want to be alive or not it’s your decision. People that are planning to do suicide don’t usually talk about their feelings and are hurt inside. But others need to see and talk to them about it to get them out of that funk. People who do suicide are probably going through hard times and the cause of suicide are most likely stress, depression, embarrassment, loneliness, love problems, household problems, loss of loved one, and low self-esteem. People think that suicide is the best thing to do; they tend to reflect their feelings with actions rather than words.…
