Brief History.
The ASB Secondary Schools Maori and Pacific Island Cultural Festival (Polyfest) is the largest Maori and Pacific Islands Cultural Festival in the World. It attracts almost 80-90 thousand audiences and followed by 8-9 thousand of students participating from 60 schools. Purpose of this event is entertaining all the audiences with traditional music, dance, costume and speech – making awards. This festival started 34 years ago at Hillary College where the first Polyfest was commenced and will continue to proceed in the coming years (www.asbpolyfest.co.nz).
Spatial Nature. The ASB Polyfest occurs at the Manukau Sports Bowl, 1 Boundary Road, Manukau, Auckland. Accessibility to this location is easy for people living out of Suburb. SH 1 N motorway is accessible to Manukau Sports Bowl by taking the Te Irirangi Drive exit. Enormous amount of parking space available. There are stalls such as craft stalls that include jewellery, clothing, carvings and paintings with a cultural theme. Food stalls in the festival are extremely popular. Each food stall comes with power, access to water and an official Polyfest sign. Only healthy foods sold in the continuation of the healthy eating program. There are health and hygiene standards that it is a requirement that a stall holder at the festival meet the Manukau City Council’s regulations (asbpolyfest.co.nz). ASB Polyfest Event is made up of 5 stages, Maori, Samoan, Tongan, Cook Island, Niuean. A sixth stage also includes the Diversity stage, which provides a platform for other ethnic groups, such as Fiji, Tokelau, Indian, Chinese and many more www.asbpolyfest.co.nz. The diversity stage is centrally located so it is an event distance from each entrance, as the diversity stage is likely to attract the largest audience due to its stage hosting so many groups.
