Is it possible to worship and believe in a thing so much that you would go out in the middle of winter and camp on a roof for it? According to this short story it apparently is, but that is not what I will be focusing on this essay. Faith is a short story that revolts around the idea of how a single human being can come into your life, and change it forever. In this essay I am going to focus on how Brian’s commitment and faith in the football team, intrigues and changes Sarah throughout the short story.

According to this short story it apparently is, and that is what I will be focusing on while I analyze this essay. Faith is a short story that revolts around the idea of how a single human beings passion and infatuation can inspire you and change your life forever. Sarah is stuck in an apartment with her boyfriend who is incapable of getting her pregnant. She is completely out of faith, when Brian suddenly shows up in her life. Brian miraculously makes Sarah question her life and future, which eventually leads to her leaving the apartment and Paul forever. Faith is one of the strongest words in this short story, and it shows its numerous forms throughout this short story. Brain has faith in his team, which guides him to the top of a building (p48, l.3). Brian also shows faith in himself, because he truly believes in what he does. Sarah is without a doubt the character that shows the biggest change in faith. She starts off with a lack of faith in everything, but as the story progresses she undergoes a remarkable change, and eventually changes her fate. Faith is what drives the characters in this story, from the very beginning to the very end, which means that the title of the story is very relevant. Passion is also a keyword when analyzing the short story. Passion is shown many times in “Faith”. Brian’s passion for football is one example, but the short story also shows lacks of passion. Sarah is passionate about having a baby, but she is not very passionate about the idea of Paul being a part of her future (p51, l.19. Passion is what the short story uses as a motivator for the characters. Brian`s and his passion is very essential for the story, and it is what Sarah uses to motivate herself. Change and transformation are also keywords that are important to “faith”. Brian is the direct opposite of Paul and vice versa. Brian is full of passion and faith, and believes in what he does. He is brave enough to camp on a roof, because he is guided by his faith in the football team. Paul is the direct opposite. While Brian believes in what he does, Paul is more of a bystander. He isn’t very passionate about getting Sarah pregnant, and he is satisfied with his life as it is. Sarah is caught in the middle of these two men, and is affected by both off them. She starts off in the same dead end cycle as Paul, but as the story progresses, she transforms, and at the end of the story Sarah is a completely changed version her former self.
