The Last Spin is a short story written by Evan Hunter about two boys from rival gangs, Tigo and Danny, who were picked to settle an argument by playing Russian roulette after shooting at a candy shop in which in the end there could only be one winner.
An idea that interests me in the short story The Last Spin written by Evan Hunter is gang rivalry, conflict and friendship. The theme of conflict and gang rivalry is shown throughout the first part of the story. An example is when Evan Hunter makes it obvious through his use of personification. “The jacket told Danny that Tigo was his enemy. The jacket shrieked “Enemy, enemy”. This shows the theme of conflict and rival gang because of the fact that Tigo’s jacket was a different colour which represented their gangs. This conflict and gang rivalry that Tigo and Danny show taught me that judging other people means you also judge yourself and it does not bring anything good into world but to start war. For my personal experience I have been judged by my clothes so it made me concerned with what I wear to fit in the society. I spend more time than I usually need to on my clothing.
Turn after turn passes, Tigo and Danny figures out that they actually have more in common. As their friendship develops it gets harder to think that one of the will die. An example before the last spin, Tigo asked Danny “Friend?” Danny replies “Sure we can.” And after the last spin Danny dies and Tigo shed tears “Then he put his head on the table and began weeping.” This shows that Danny and Tigo accepted their differences and they didn’t want to do it for their gangs anymore. This friendship that Tigo and Danny shows taught me change is always worth it, if it’s for the better and not gamble your life for something you were peer pressured in. As for me this year, I have managed my studying time by going to the library every after school to get my grades up.
