English Essay Gr 12 Outline
Are computers bad for our health? The internet/computer only took an astonishing four year to reach 50 million users while it took the television 13 years and the radio 38 years (Shrivastav, "Interesting Facts about Computers"). Everyday more and more people are starting to use their computer for all kinds of different reasons. The use of a computer is appealing to everyone because it is so easy to do anything on it. Adults can read news for free and children can play games on it. Computers are putting the health of our society at risk. The constant use of computers leads to poor posture, childhood obesity, and dangerous radiation.

Posture- personal anecdote
Leads to neck problems, bad posture. Problems with my neck and posture.
Computer use is causing an ever increasing endemic of body stiffness, aches and pains whose real toll we won’t realize for many years. Because computer repetitive strain injuries result from doing the same motion over and over again, it often takes years for them to fully present themselves. By the time you feel it, it’s already a problem. (Dr. Cohen)

Childhood obesity- literary reference “Computer games make teenagers hungry and more likely to become obese, scientists claim. They stimulate youngsters’ appetites encouraging them to raid the fridge and cupboards for snacks.”(Borland, "Playing Computer Games Increases Obesity Risk in Teens by Making Them Hungry")

Radiation- verifiable fact “In significant enough doses, computer radiation can have a myriad of negative effects on the body such as; fertility issues with both men and women, DNA fragmentation (irreversible changes to the genetic code), skin burns and rashes as well as other serious health conditions.”(computer radiation)

Conclusion-
Mention poor posture, increase of childhood obesity and dangerous radiation

With the rapid development of society, modern technology has become one of the most dispensable parts in most people’s daily lives. It is no doubt that modern technology like cell phones and Internet have been widely put into use. We even cannot imagine a day without Internet and electronic devices. It is no exaggeration to say that modern technology has more or less “robbed” the daily lives of most people. Many people are addicted to texting and social networking like Facebook. Sherry Turkle, in her essay “Alone Together”, argues that the machine-mediated relationships might cause many problems between people. And more and more people are “playing themselves” online with different identities. People are even more alone after using modern technology. Kenji Yoshino, in his essay “Covering: The Hidden Assault on Our Civil Rights”, asserts that everyone covers, and people cover in order to be accepted by the mainstream. Many teenagers would rather text than talk on the cellphone. People avoid face-to-face or voice-to-voice contact in order to “cover”. On the one hand, modern technology can bring people countless convenience. On the other hand, these technologies can also boost covering described by Yoshino. And the reliance on the kind of technology described in “Alone Together” can provide the opportunities for people to cover themselves.…

Overall, video games promote an unhealthy lifestyle for American youth. Video games have been clinically proven to cause sleep deprivation, dietary irregularities, and time consumption conflicts. “Play time” was once considered when friends got together and had fun in the sun.
