(Revised) Essay Exam #1: Fromm’s – Becoming an individual

Erich Fromm a psychoanalyst and social critic who stated we should be disobedient for an individual can create a whole new beginning to the society. Meaning, becoming obedient can change a certain man’s life rejecting from higher class and creating his own. But as one man invents the whole world would want it. Releasing a new introduction could lead to “commodity hunger” and becoming “one man” that can change the world. To become an individual, the best way to start is to disobey the law and be free from them to do whatever you want. Do your own material production. The definition of disobedience in the dictionary means you didn't follow the rules/procedures that can cause you to get in trouble. By Fromm’s definition of disobedience describes the way to live among the society. Living under one political government, following the rules no matter what the consequences is, but in order to fulfill that goal, disobeying the law is the best way to get started. Fromm said, “If the capacity for disobedience constituted the beginning of human history, obedience might cause the end of human history.” (par. 10). The main purpose was to be disobedience; therefore many individuals are starting to disobey political. Just to do their own. A man needs to break the spell of an evil government and save his life of becoming an individual; he needs to act on his own. Nobody wants to do the same routine over and over again, the process sound dull and boring many people think it’s time for a change. Men and women individual should think before the follow, for example when a soldier is out fighting in the war, and see women and children on the battlefield. Instead of aiming his gun and pulling the trigger he let them go because what god does it take to kill innocence life’s that are not involved in the war? Fromm believes that one person can have one personality

Erich Fromm is “one of the twentieth century’s distinguished writers and thinkers” (240). This is made apparent in his essay, “Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem,” in which he describes the various types of obediences and disobediences and how they are either contributive or detrimental to humanity. Fromm argues that “human history began with an act of disobedience, and that it is not unlikely that it will be terminated by an act of obedience” (246). Since the beginning of human history, concepts such as individuality, authority, and totalitarianism, have been placed side by side often for comparison and tested by the events that they provoked. The two factors that have both aided and create difficulties for human progression are obedience and disobedience. Although Fromm uses religious and mythological figures to demonstrate this, his essay reminds us of past historical figures (such as Martin Luther King Jr., Adolf Hitler, and Saddam Hussein) and possible future events that have and will show us that disobedience may be all that stands between a future for mankind and the end of civilization.…

Fromm explains his views by first examining the fact that across many different cultures, there is a common belief that human life as we know it began with an act of disobedience. He cites the examples of Adam and Eve and the Original Sin, and Prometheus theft of fire from the gods of ancient Greek mythology (Fromm 402, 403). He also thinks that human development advanced through acts of disobedience. Fromm says, “intellectual development was dependant on the capacity for being disobedient to authorities that tried to muzzle new thoughts and to the authority of long established opinions which declared change to be nonsense,” (Fromm 403.) He uses this evidence to state his view that if human history started with and evolved through acts of disobedience; it may very well end because of an act of…

Belonging can be defined in many ways as there is no exact meaning, though belonging can be defined as a sense of enlightenment felt when an individual gains an understanding of themselves in relation to others and the world around them. The feeling of belonging does depend on a strong relationship between people that has been developed over a period of time either short or long. In the film ‘strictly ballroom’ the director Baz Luhrmann clearly shows how the protagonist’s develop a sense of acceptance towards each other as the film progresses and this allows their relationship to strengthen over time. Also in the poem ‘wind and window flower’ written by Robert Frost the theme of relationships and depicts the idea of unrequited love.…

This quote means that you have many moments in life that are simply just to take up time and carry one throughout the years but memories are much more important and stay in one’s head forever with no time limit. This quote is significant to the two novels Rush Home Road and Kite Runner because each protagonist has a past that they carry with them throughout their years. Their memories of tragedy are with them forever and there is no way of escaping them permanently. In the novels Rush Home Road by Lori Lansens and Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, the protagonists, Addy and Amir, are constantly drawn back home by recalling difficult memories, through adoption, and with the idea that they have a mission to complete.…

As I finish reading ‘The Odyssey’, story that is told by homer a poet who loved to tell stories of the gods and all the adventures and journeys the heroes went through. Odysseus the man who is astute and cares nothing but to get home to Ithaca where there, lies his kingdom, life, wife, and son who he had left when he was just born. While some might argue that Odysseus is not a hero, his decidedly heroic actions outweigh all of his faults because he is dishonest, self-centered, disloyal and disrespectful. He doesn’t care if he puts his man in danger he just wants to come back to Ithaca.…

In many ways disobedience creates the human characteristics that now exist. we live to establish and command only to further destroy and separate. Although these words may sound negative, they don't have to be. There are plenty of instances where the only option for a better resolve is the separation from an already established principle. It is this way, in which humans can evolve into a better version of themselves. In my own personal thoughts, a person can not remain glued to one way of thinking, but must expand, create, and gain knowledge of many ways of thinking. In this aspect, a person can grow rather than be satisfied. People must rebel and disobey to acknowledge of new and possibly better ways of thinking and innovation.…

A hero is a man noted for his special achievements according to the dictionary, but if you ask most people what a hero is, you will get the same general response. They will probably say someone who does something for other people out of the goodness of his heart. Odysseus, who is the main character of the story, "The Odyssey" told by Homer, would fit the dictionary's definition of a hero; but if you go deeper, looking at what people feel a hero is, he doesn't even come close. In the book, Odysseus does nothing out of the goodness of his heart. Even if Odysseus fought in the Trojan War, he is not a hero because he is self-centered and ignorant to other peoples' values and needs.…
