Gender Issues
I. The Procedure of Interview
The Pearl, a novella written by John Steinbeck, illustrates various social issues of Indian people while living under the colonization of Spanish people. These social issues include: family issues, gender issues, social oppression or exploitation, family future plan and fate and determination. Among these matters, we decided to elaborate the gender issues due to the fact that this topic is widespread in the contemporary society. Of course, before study this matter in details, we have to conduct some interviews in some families first in order to figure out some similarities and differences concerning the gender issues.
Below are the processes of our interview of two families concerning this topic.
First, we went to interview Mrs. Pov Nhim’s family. It is located in Khan Chamkamorn, Phnom
Penh, adjacent to Vanda Institute of Accounting. Mrs. Pov Nhim is a grocer. Her family consists of five members, her husband, her two children and her. During the interview, we asked her how her husband and she play role in family leadership, decision making, conflict resolution, property maintaining and the like. In her answers, she mentioned that both her husband and her usually share responsibility and respect each other’s opinions, which is contrasting from Kino’s family in The Pearl.
Second, we decided to interview Mrs. Hong Sekmey, the owner of Baksey Srock, a canteen at
IFL. In her family, there 7 members, her parents, her husband, two children, and her. During the interview, we also asked her how her husband and she play role in family leadership, decision making, conflict resolution, property maintaining and the like. Her answer is very different from the first family owing to the fact that most these workload are responsible
