American Dream Essay
I. Introduction:
A. Opening Statement: Achieving the American dream is difficult if you are born in to the lower class of America.
B. Author/Title: The American dream can be defined as the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative
C. Thesis: The American dream is infrequent due to the modern and changing America.
II. Body: CNN-Money “The American Dream is out of reach”-Luhby
A. Topic Statement: If the American dream means a reasonable rate of income growth for working people, most people can’t expect to achieve it.
i. Fact: Most people can’t get ahead financially. ii. Fact: The rich are more debt-free. Others have no choice.
III. Body: Equality of Opportunity Project:
A. Topic Statement: The middle class wage has not risen in 15 years. In fact, the percentage of middle-class households in America is actually decreasing. Median household income has fallen since the financial crisis of 2008, while income for the wealthiest of Americans has actually increased.
i. Fact: Education for every American who wants to get ahead. These days you have to be rich to get a college education, unless you want to begin your career with a mountain of debt. ii. Fact: There are two classes of Americans: Those who are taking on additional debt, and the rich.
IV. Body: The Daily Beast- “The American Dream is Dead, and Good Riddance”
A. Topic Statement: As the recession gets worse, and we take stock of our country's lost jobs, foreclosed homes and wiped out 401(k)s, many Americans are sorry that the loss of the American dream can be proven with statistics and data points.
i. Fact: Even with health insurance, medical care is increasingly less affordable for most people. ii. Fact: Americans can no longer look forward to a secure retirement. iii. Fact: The stay-at-home parent is a thing of the
