The Roles and Images of Women in “The Good Earth”

In the novel, The Good Earth, one of the images of women here is an unattractive wife who is only but a servant to his husband. This can be seen in the character of O-Lan. She was his wife and she did nothing but to serve him and his grandfather faithfully. She prepared food for them everyday. She helped Wang Lung with the field. She bore him sons. After she bore his first son alone, she immediately returned to Wang Lung to help him in the field. All this she did in silence. Wang Lung was a little annoyed at this but he also thought that it was just right for her not to say anything. After all, she was just his wife and he need not be concerned about her. Since O-Lan was not a beautiful woman, Wang Lung did not pay much attention to her. He was also not satisfied with her so he looked for another woman.

Another image of women here is that they were worthless as daughters. Daughters were raised only to be sold as slaves or to be married to a man and given to another family. In the birth of his third child, he had hoped that it was a son, but it was not. He saw this as a beginning of bad fortune for his family. Also, his wife said that the birth of their first daughter was not worth mentioning. Wang Lung's first daughter, during the famine, he almost sold in order to return to his land, but seeing her smile, he did not. At this, he thought of himself as a good father since some families killed their child right after birth if it was a girl.

A role of women, specifically the fair ones, was pleasure for men. When Wang Lung grew idle, he sought something to keep him occupied. He eventually found Lotus. The wife he had, O-Lan, was not beautiful, but this one was. She had more feminine features. Wang Lung enjoyed every night he spent with her and was addicted to it. He came to the point where he bought her so that he owned her and that he can be with her anytime he wanted to.

The Death of Woman Wang, by Jonathan D. Spence, paints a vivid picture of provincial China in the seventeenth century. Manly the life in the northeastern country of T’an-ch’eng. T’an-ch’eng has been through a lot including: an endless cycle of floods, plagues, crop failures, banditry, and heavy taxation. Chinese society in Confucian terms was a patriarchal society with strict rules of conduct. The role at this time of women, however, has historically been one of repression. The traditional ideal woman was a dependent being whose behavior was governed by the "three obedience’s and four virtues". The three obedience’s were obedience to father before marriage, the husband after marriage, and the son in case of widows. The four virtues were propriety in behavior, speech, demeanor and employment. The laws of the land and fear of shame in society dictated that men were allowed to rule over their household leaving women in a powerless state as almost a slave of the home. In P’u’s stories women are portrayed as complex characters who hold important roles in the family, but are treated with little to no respect by authority figures, and other men of higher class. In The Death of Woman Wang, Spence portrays…

“Then O-lan worked in the house and made new clothes for each one and new shoes, and she made coverings for flowered cloth stuffed with warm cotton for every bed . . .” This quote from the book was taken after Wang Lung had come into great wealth and bought even more land from the Great House. O-lan was then able to focus on doing house work. She did as instructed to and went further than told with her work. Arguing and passing around chores was never an option in her mind; she just did it all! Her submissiveness was prime in allowing other people to boss her around. By never standing up for herself, she tripped into a hole that was hard to dig out…

In the beginning of The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck, the character as well as the protagonist, Wang Lung, is presented as a poor farmer in China, who soon marries an unattractive slave, named O-lan. O-lan has a silent and obedient nature to her which is a quality that is valued highly in wives of Wang Lung's culture. Wang Lung’s disappointment that his wife does not have bound feet, a Chinese culture that represented wealth, showed the beauty standards that were placed in China's society at the time. Also, Lung is concerned when O-lan gives birth to their first daughter, because in Chinese culture it is seen as bad luck and in the story, did bring bad luck. In Chao Ch ichiao’s case, she was not independent and her fate was controlled by her family for wealth. 8. Even though she struggled for gender equality, possessiveness, freedom, and love, she had nothing to fight against the rule before she got married and had no one to depend on after marriage because her husband was not a healthy man. 9. After she spent her life in complaining, struggling and destroying, the author wrote that: ” She had used its heavy edges to chop down several people; those that did not die were half dead.”. 11. As we enter the hall of the National Museum of the Philippines, the prominence of "Spoliarium" an oil on poplar completed in 1884 by National Artist, Juan Luna, is remarkable. The super- sized painting depicts a dark hollow beneath the Roman arena referred to as the Spoliarium where the bodies of slain gladiators are being dragged away for disposal. This is the time in history when the Romans travelled to Europe and collected slaves, otherwise known as the Vikings, to entertain other people in Rome. The Romans created the “Viking Games” where Vikings were forced by Romans to battle lions, tigers and against themselves in an arena. It strikes me as extremely violent, bloody and inhuman. The slaves have no other choice than to fight and kill in order for them to survive. The purpose of the Spoliarium was to “spoil” the dead bodies of the gladiators by exposing them to birds or any creature that eats human flesh. In the right side of the picture you will see an old lady waiting for the corpse of her loved one and an old man searching for the body of his son. The distress is palpable.…

During the 70’s, the collaboration of Apple Inc. and Microsoft to come up with Apple 2 is really endearing, and for me that is how you create a revolutionary/radical technology. As Bill discussed how Microsoft got engaged in the creation of Apple 2, they have already exemplified the school of thought of the 5th generation style of management. Though the fruition of GUI was not realized until the early 90’s, they were already betting on the technology to be the next big thing. It was a great leap for both companies as they try to partner up with each other.…
