Prisons are a dangerous place where troubled individuals with often a long history of violence are sent as punishment against their will. In prisons they are kept in a confined space with individuals they may not like and staff that they massively outnumber but have to take instruction from. This is the core of where the problem of violence in prisons arises.
There is often the culture of violence in these facilities. Prisoners contribute to violence in prison in as many forms as there are individuals or groups who are typically incarcerated. This can include gangs, feuding individuals and even a person or a group of people trying to cement their place above another inmate or gang. The mentality of every man for himself /gang for themselves, stirs up many issues in jails many of which are violent or dealt with in a violent manner. With the ever growing number of inmates here and around the world, violence in prisons appears to be becoming a greater issue. With higher prison populations, prison staff find it ever more difficult to deal with violence in jails. This is why it is important to implement strategies and measures to help control and prevent violent issues in prisons.
