The English language is originated from the German language, which has its roots from England. The English language became known after the translation of the Bible by Luther from Latin into German. After that, during the reign of James the First of England in 1611 appeared the first version of the Bible in English called the Bible of King James (King James Version). The translation of the Bible has had a decisive influence on English literature and the English language as a whole. Today, English has become one of the most spoken languages in the world, and is ranked as the second most spoken Language. Considered as an international language, it is the most learned and studied language throughout …show more content…
the world. Regarding the importance of this language, Oklahoma’s law prohibits the use of languages other than English in driver’s licenses and other government documents. Accordingly, I argue that English should be the official language of Oklahoma, while bilingual ballots should be eliminated. I also think bilingual education should be applied in Oklahoma public schools not as substitute to English but as an option.
I think English should be the official language of Oklahoma. As Hailey Branson could say, for people to succeed in this country, they need to perfectly master the language. I support his view because it is a true fact that international trade is done in English, all scientific articles are in English, and everything related to technology are done through English, so whether we like it or not, English happens to be the language that the world has chosen for international communication. I, therefore, see no reason why a country to be known as an English speaking country should speak anything other than what other nations see to be the most important language in the world. A survey from Sue Purcell “How many people speak English?” shows that about a billion people speak English as a foreign language, just like what Branson said in his article, “I have never heard anyone say that they did not want to learn English.” That reminds me of the huge amount of money non speaker of English have to spend in a school of languages because of how much we value it. English should be the official language of Oklahoma, a few support the fact for English not to be the official language because by doing so, it will be a frustration for those who are American by integration, as they might think the law is being applied against them. For reasons that the true Americans are the first colonist who arrived in the country with English background, they also disagree as they believe it is a kind of linguistic attitude where society is being governed by a group of English speakers. Unfortunately, their claims are not verified for the reason that the law does not discriminate against anyone, as the President of the country is not a descendant of any colonist but that did not affect him in his career. Although it is nice to speak more than one language but it is better for English to be the language spoken in public, since speaking different languages in a society can be a factor of diffusion. I have witness a situation in a supermarket where group of workers were speaking they dialect, thinking they were the only people to understand it without knowing I was perfectly hearing the insult they were talking about customers and their manager.
John Miller makes a considerable Remark about how government waste county’s resources in bilinguals ballots and I also share the same view because it costs a lot of money to print ballots in foreign language. Meanwhile there are not useful during election, as people for whom the ballots are being printed are not using them. Moreover, some Hispanic groups argue against bilingual ballots as being an educational prejudice. It is therefore true that no matter how good a law can be, there will always be unsatisfied people. As far as polling is one of the vital areas in which citizens participate directly in democracy, since the use of a single language responds to the principle of indivisibility of a nation, the use of English should be enforced in official documents, and why should we encourage investing a lot of money into something that is not useful when we know that the American Government owns a lot of money to foreign countries.
At this point, I think it will be wise for the government to invest the wasted money in printing bilingual ballots into bilingual education programs that will help student improve their performance and understand the materials that are being taught at schools.
English is the main language of books, newspapers, aviation, business, international exhibitions, scientific conferences, technology, innovation, diplomacy, sport, and international competitions so implementing a bilingual system in school should not being seeing as a waste of money as the article “Pro English” claims about bilingual education doesn’t help student improve their performance in school, and find it very expensive and meaningless because by doing so, they think students will end up speaking different languages other than English. I disagree with those fact because I think bilingual education shouldn’t be seen from that angle but rather it should be a way of helping students whose first language is not English, in order to be at the same standard of understanding the course material with the native English speakers because I guess students will better comprehend classes like history, political science and many literature subject if the opportunity are giving to Oklahoma’s students, which also contribute in reducing drop-out
rates.
In conclusion, I think it will be benefic and a wise decision for Oklahomans to implement the law of using English as the official language by saving more money from the wasted ballots translated in Spanish. That amount of money should rather be invested in bilingual education system that is more advantageous to the country and it citizen.
