Tell Dally. It was too late to tell Dally. Would he have listened? I doubted it. Suddenly it wasn't only a personal thing to me. I could picture hundreds and hundreds of boys living on the wrong sides of cities, boys with black eyes who jumped at their own shadows. Hundreds of boys who maybe watched sunsets and looked at stars and ached for something better. I could see boys going down under street lights because they were mean and tough and hated the world, and it was too late to tell them that there was still good in it, and they wouldn't believe you if you did. It was too vast a problem to be just a personal thing. There should be some help, someone should tell them before it was too late. Someone should tell their side of the story, and maybe people would understand then and wouldn't be so quick to judge a boy by the amount of hair oil he wore. It was important to me. I picked up the phone book and called my English teacher.
"Mr. Syme, this is Ponyboy. That theme--- how long can it be?"
"Why, uh, not less than five pages." He sounded a little surprised. I'd forgotten it was late at night.
"Can it be longer?"
"Certainly, Ponyboy, as long as you want it."
"Thanks," I said and hung up.
I sat down and picked up my pen and thought for a minute. Remembering. Remembering a handsome, dark boy with a reckless grin and a hot temper. A tough, tow-headed boy with a cigarette in his mouth and a bitter grin on his hard face. Remembering--- and this time it didn't hurt--- a quiet, defeated-looking sixteen-year-old whose hair needed cutting badly and who had black eyes with a frightened expression to them. One week had taken all three of them. And I decided I could tell people, beginning with my English teacher. I wondered for a long time how to start that theme, how to start writing about something that was important to me. And I finally began like this: When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home...

I disagree with Leon Botstein's essay "Let Teenagers Try Adulthood". Botstein argues that teenagers have matured much more quickly over the past few years. Therefore, he believes high school be abolished and a child's education should begin earlier in order for students to graduate around the age of sixteen rather than eighteen. High school is intended for students of a certain maturity level. But now, students are exceeding that level rapidly. Botstein sees high school as a place full of superficial, adolescent teenagers that care more about appearances, popularity, cliques and sports than education. Because they have reached a high maturity level at such a young age already, there are many students that are wasting their junior and senior years away in high school rather than starting college. I disagree with Botstein however. High school is a transition period for students to learn how to take on more responsibilities. It is the time for teenagers to become more social and independent. While I do agree with Botstein on his point of maturity levels growing faster, I don't agree that students should be graduating earlier than they currently are. Not all students are capable of the same things. Most high school students are not prepared to enter into adulthood just yet. They still need someone to guide them along a path until they've graduated. Age restrictions are applied to the youth community for a reason. The majority of teenagers are not ready to handle the responsibilities that come their way. The legal age for drinking is 21 because of safety concerns as well as the responsibility that comes with the consumption of alcohol. Fortunately for Texas, teenagers are able to obtain their drivers license at the age of sixteen, but other states, like California, have citizens wait until they are eighteen to obtain their license with the same privileges as a sixteen year old from Texas. Responsibilities are tough to handle, even for an adult. So why have the same…

Melissa Duffy’s essay titled, “Inspiration” is an excellent example of how an individual’s attitude toward a certain subject, in this case, writing, influences the way the preform. There are a number of reasons why I have considered Suny Empire State College as an option to continue my education. Suny Empire offers multiple study options such as studying with a mentor, as well as convenient online study. Suny Empire offers much more affordable education rates than many other colleges out there. I’d like to continue my education through Suny Empire to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Community and Human Services. I believe this field of study is ideal for me as I have prior Human Services experience. Overview: For this assignment you will write an autobiographical narrative based on your past literary experience that communicates insight about yourself as a reader and/or writer to your audience (in this case, your instructor and your classmates). Your essay should center around one remembered event and/or one remembered person. It should not be several small anecdotes combined into one essay, although you may refer to these in your essay. You may consider places, family traditions, teaching methods, school experiences, classes, assignments, or anything else from your past that has helped shape your literacy. You will want to make sure that your essay explains how your chosen topic changed you in some way. Use detail, description, and/or dialogue to tell your story compellingly and vividly. To get started, we have read and will continue to read and discuss both professional and student narratives. Distant Drumming of pens dancing on paper grows as each minute passes. My heart skips a beat, my heart begins to pound in my ears, my heart starts to race as I anticipate what to write next. The clock is ticking and time is running out. A cold sweat engulfs me as I crash into a writer’s block. Suddenly without warning the timer sounds and its is time to stop the timed essay. The throbbing sound of pens gradually comes to a halt. I take a deep breath and try to scan over what I have written. While handing in my paper I start to ponder how it all began. Memories of my struggles in kindergarten pass over me, then, flashes of freshmen year in high school along with thought of my family’s expectations shortly after.…

It’s a fair bit to remember. One of the most effective ways to improve our own writing skill is to spend some time reading the works of others. Reading actually enables us to expand and broaden our knowledge. The more knowledge we have, the betterequipped we are to tackle any challenge we'll face. The more we read, the more words we gain exposure to and surely they'll walk their way into our vocabulary. Reading my classmates' essays is one vital way to learn, gain or acquire my writing proficiency. It emphasizes an assortment of experiences, their backgrounds, history and nuances as well as the various sub-plots that weave their way through every story. I had learned new techniques in writing that were not quite familiar to me. I had developed a better reading process, to better understand what was written and what was being told. By this activity, it had helped me magnify what were stored in my vocabulary. This Summer Vacation Essay Activity taught me to become a better reader and coached me on how to get better readers. This task goes hand-in-hand with the expansion of my terminologies and word-stock. Exposure to these essays has noted an effect on my own writing style, as observing the cadence, fluidity and writing preferences of my other classmates. It made me realize that in order to become an excellent writer, one must practice the ability of being a diligent reader. It’s a fair bit to remember.…
