2. How did the Enlightenment contribute to the independence movement in the American colonies?
The Enlightenment was an intellectual movement emphasizing logic, reason, and science. This was a very limited movement and only applied to the elite and those that could read and write. The Enlightenment caused a loss of authority of the churches and monarchy which caused people to think for themselves and make rules for themselves and not depend on the church. It also split up the church and made several branches, such as Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, etc. This allowed people to individually decide which branch they wanted to be go with.
