Enzyme Kinetics Lab
Introduction:
Enzymes are proteins that will catalyze reactions to make the rate of the reaction occur faster than it would without. It can also make the reaction occur in the first place. Tyrosinase is an enzyme that has a variety of functions and activities. It produces pigments like melanin and others that would be apparent when a fruit is cut in half and it browns. (Bien-etre 3).There is that one function that stands out and the enzyme is continuously studied for. This activity would be to form an intermediate metabolite known as dopaquinone that is used in the formation of melanin. Tyrosinase starts off catalyzing the amino acid tyrosine forming DOPA, which is then transformed …show more content…
They stated that the quantities and rates if synthesis of melanogenic enzymes and the formation of melanin did have a positive coerrelation (Koichiro 1). The melanogenic enzymes they were looking at included tyrosinase, TRP1 (Tyrosinase related protein 1), and also TRP2 (tyrosinase related protein 2). This is a result that would be expected because as stated before tyrosinase’s main function is to aid in the final production of pigments in nearly all cells. In the skin of humans tyrosinase plays a very important role because it aids in the formation of melanin that has two forms, being eumelanin and pheomelanin. Eumelanin is the really important form because of its photo protective property. Eumelanin helps protect the DNA in our cells from UV radiation. Without eumelanin there to protect our cells from this UV radiation, something as serious as skin cancer can be much more prevalent (Clinuvel 1-10). It is also important to note that enzymes can be inhibited as well. In the following lab performed, there was an attempt to inhibit tyrosinase with benzoic
