Epic Of Beowulf Essay: Good Vs. Evil
In the poem, “Beowulf” the author presents good v. evil as the central them. With Beowulf as the protagonist and Grendel as the antagonist. However some may think differently about this ancient piece of literature. Some may look at this piece of literature like the best piece someone has ever wrote. A lot look at it with the protagonist and antagonist switched but just by reading the story, it’s very hard to make Grendel a good guy. I look at this oldest surviving piece of literature the same way the author looks at it. The author looks at it like good v. evil.
Grendel is “a powerful monster that lives in darkness.” Hrothgar’s warriors lived happy in his hall until Grendel attacked. Grendel lived in a swampy hell hole on earth. When darkness fell Grendel quietly went to Herot. Wondering what Hrothgar’s men were doing after they were done drinking. When the warrior pasted out from drinking, Grendel knew it was time to sink his claws into them. After Grendel killed every

So Beowulf took his strongest men to the Herot to wait and fight Grendel. When the brave men are waiting, Grendel attacks but only takes out one before Grendel got a piece of him. This part of the book shows how Beowulf is a good guy because he is trying to protect his people by stopping Grendel.
Beowulf grabbed Grendel by the arm and ripped it off but Grendel got away. There was no way that Grendel was going to survive the damage. Word got to his mom that Beowulf killed her son so she wanted revenge on him. Beowulf went to the sea dove to the bottom of it to fight Grendel’s mom. Grendel’s mom gave Beowulf a really good fight that he almost lost. As Beowulf’s people watched the water the only thing that was coming up was blood. Then suddenly Beowulf would surface untouched. Beowulf is the main character in his own Epic, with Grendel being the first obstacle to overpower. A Simple description for a simple book. For this reason Grendel is a cliché character that the readers will dismiss with hast; Grendel is a straightforward, but horrifying, monster. “So mankind's enemy continued his crimes, Killing as often as he could, coming Alone, bloodthirsty and horrible” (79-81). Grendel is not as plain in Grendel the novel, he is every bit as gory though. “I lift her by the armpits as though she was a child and, gently, I set her aside” (147). This tells a many great things, first is Grendel’s…

While Grendel was beginning his revenge, he was feeling great he couldn’t believe his luck. “ I can hardly believe my luck, and my wild heart laughs, but I let out no sound. Swiftly, softly, I will move from bed to bed and destroy them all, Swallow every last man” (Gardner 168). When Grendel found out it was all a trap to kill him, he thought he would be able to defeat them all. They were just men, he could simply eat them. But when he faces Beowulf he starts to think differently. “ I realize, have I encountered a grip like his. My whole arm was on fire” (gardner 168). When Grendel is seriously injured, he knows he has no chance against Beowulf. When Grendel is about to die a man mentions “ poor grendel’s had an accident” Grendel last words…

We’ve grown quite a lot through time with technology, architecture, and even through our ideals. In the Beowulf the epic (Heaney 2000), we see right and wrong through the eyes of the past and it is strange to say the least. The author wrote this for their intended audience, meaning they were reflecting the cultural values of the ancient Anglo-Saxons. In the movie, Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarsson 2005), we see changes from the original work that seems to match to modern ideas of right and wrong. Two characters, Hrothgar and Grendel, one who was a man of the light and kin of the dark respectively, were changed to match the ideals we hold today into completely different people that we had known them to be.…

In the epic poem Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney, it follows the dissension between the valiant and intrepid warrior and the supernatural evil that causes the message of good versus evil to be a primary theme throughout the poem. These struggles characterize both the protagonists and antagonists in the story, thus these opposite forces continually clash leading to a divide in society and a desire for good to outlast evil. Throughout the epic, the poet emphasizes the theme of barbaric against civilized through the message that one is classified based on the motives behind their actions, one cannot exist without the other, and divine intervention will always help good defeat evil.…

After hearing Grendel’s attacks on Herot, an eager Beowulf seeks more fame by informing Hrothgar that he will take revenge on Grendel for killing Hrothgar’s men. As Beowulf's men are asleep in the hall, the hero lays in the dark waiting for Grendel to arrive. To show, Raffel notes, “He twisted in pain, and the bleeding sinews deep in his shoulders snapped, muscle and bone split and broke… Grendel escaped… only to die,” (Beowulf 600-07). Evidently, Beowulf took revenge on Grendel by tearing off his arm, which ultimately lead to Grendel’s death. As a result, Grendel’s mother then seeks revenge for her son’s…

Beowulf’s first villain Grendel is an exceptionally diverse character. His nature is ambiguous. He is a mix of man and beast and his fury is based on very human feelings of resentment and jealousy. Although Grendel is portrayed as an animal like demonic creature of some sort, upon further examination the reader begins to sympathize with the very human emotions that drive him to kill.…

Part A- Beowulf like all epic hero’s is strong loyal and brave. These characteristic are what define Beowulf, and instill fear is his enemies. He boasts about “(driving) / five great giants into chains” (248-249) and “In the blackness of night, hunting monsters” (251). Beowulf protects his followers and king, and is proud of his accomplishments. He strives for greatness, his words are arrogant but his actions shine through his overbearing pride and give him the capability to be heroic. (Part B) Beowulf is an epic hero; he takes great pride in his actions, unlike Grendel who feels jealous of humans which causes him to be spiteful towards them: “ Grendel snatched at the first Geat / He came to (and) Ripped him apart” (313-314). Grendel’s pride lays in the fear he instills on humans, without pride Grendel would be a monster with no motive to kill. Furthermore, Beowulf’s pride stems…

When I sent my son out into Herot, the meadhall of Hrothgar, I knew he would shower a reign of terror upon all the land, and that is exactly what he did. Grendel terrorized Herot, just as I had so many years before. I was so proud of my son, and of myself that I could finally sit back and pass the torch to the next dominant sea monster. However, Grendel's end came before his time, and even before mine. To my shock and disbelief, someone had overcome my son. That someone went by the name of Beowulf. My Grendel, my own blood, was dead at the hands of that feeder-of-ravens.…

Beowulf is considered a heroic figure in the story because he protected the Danes from the beasts and in the movie he is portrayed more as a liar than a hero. Beowulf is described in different ways. He represents strength, bravery, loyalty and bravery. One kind of theory was written as a story for a book, another was a video version. Even though both theories relate to the same way describing him, they have some major differences. Well for one Grendel’s mother was not an attractive woman, she was a monster like Grendel. Beowulf had never slept with Grendel’s mother, and the dragon he fights in the end of the movie is not his son it’s a random dragon that he fights after returning home to Geatland to be crowned king.…

Hrothgar was the king. He has ruled with a kind heart and he loved to celebrate with his people all of their triumph. One night he had a dream, a dream of a shining hall of celebration and it was taller than the forest called the fen that stood next to the land of the Danes. Hrothgar demanded that the hall was to be built. When the hall was finished it Hrothgar christened it Hall Heorot. He invited all of the most noble men to the hall to a feast. They ate and drank, but when night fell everyone was asleep. Something crept out of the fen, it was smelly, it was Grendel. A beast that killed anything in a bloody fashion. It crept into the hall and killed everything except Hrothgar, his wife Wealtheow, and Unferth son of Ecglaf. The news of the slaughter reached the land of the Geats. There was a hero named Beowulf. Beowulf decided to go with ten men to the land of the Danes. He came with no sword and no plan. He waited in the night for Grendel. Grendel came and killed one of Beowulf’s men. Beowulf got ahold of Grendel’s arm and started to wrestle it. His hold on Grendel burned Grendel with light. Grendel writhed and tried to get away. His arm ripped out of his socket. Grendel later died of blood…
