Equiano, as far as slaves go, was very lucky. Very few slaves of that time were treated as kindly as Equiano and throughout his years of enslavement he continually got passed from one kind master to another kind master. Equiano 's continued good fortune can be traced to two good fortunes. The first would be being too young to get sold saving him from the likely fate of becoming a west indies plantation slave. The second lucky instance was having Captain Pascal spot Equiano and like him enough to buy him and have him work on the ship with him. Campbell. Captain Pascal 's finding and buying of Equiano was incredibly lucky. Pascal 's more kind nature was detrimental to Equiano 's eventual freedom. Pascal was the reason Equiano became educated and baptized. Even though Pascal personally didn 't want him to become baptized it was still under his ownership, with Miss Guerins help, that Equiano got baptized. Miss Guerins also helped him learn to read along with teaching him knowledge of god and the bible. Later on, while back at sea with his master, Captain Pascal, Equiano continued his informal education with the help of the captain 's clerk and continued to get additional educational help specifically regarding religious education from Daniel Queen. Through kindness Captain Pascal also helped Equiano become the loyal and hard working slave he was known for. I can 't say I can generalize him to be lucky as a whole because if that were true he wouldn 't have been kidnapped and put into slavery in the first place. However, after his initial kidnapping it seems that things couldn 't have gone much better for him as an African slave of that time. His luck started when he didn 't get sold in the West Indies. If it weren’t for his age he would have never been bought by Pascal and if it weren’t for Pascel he likely wouldn 't have been educated nor have had a good reputation attached to him. Those two instances of luck was the direct cause of being in Mr. King 's and Captain Farmer 's ownership. Once he had those two things the rest of his good fortunes fell like
