Ernest Hemingway’s writing typically took place throughout the World War II era. His works are bleak and dismal, and describe that undertone well. Hemingway was not a very cheerful person, but puts on a good, brave face for everyone. He wrote more than a few short stories about war, all the stories having the same type theme of soldier’s struggle to fit back into society that does not understand what the soldier’s have gone through while away. Many critics believe that these stories are based on his life experiences, but are fictional stories. The emotions that are in the stories can seem real to the readers. A few things looked at in the article includes sex, lies, how to deal with difference and social differences. It was not the same character Hemingway had being using before he wrote “Soldier’s Home. He changed characters in “Soldier’s Home”. When he changed characters from Nick Adams to Harold Krebs, critics wonder why because this is off of Hemingway’s way. This article helps to define what a soldier has to encompass when returning home from a life of nothing but misfortunate. A soldier has to learn how to fit in a normal society without leaving his tragedies behind. Society was not the same when soldier’s return as when they left. it was a different place and time. Everybody that was at home, nothing had changed in their lives, it remained the same. When a soldier returns home they want to talk about what they experienced in war but no one wants to hear the ugly truth. Everyone just wants to hear the good stuff that went on. So to make life simple soldiers continue to lie. De Baerdemaker states “The tragedy of Harold Krebs, then, lies in not having to talk or having experiences into the paradigm(s) expected in small town USA (De Baerdmaker 58).” When soldier’s return home it is not the same as when they left. Hemingway had lied about his own experiences in war but wanted to feel like a hero when he came home. When he returned it was not of normal life but images of violent and mostly lies.
