The explosion of new technologies in the 1950’s and 1960’s created a wave of innovation, enhancing the lives of men and women. Fancy new products were being produced enabling the lives of the people in this time to consume leisurely items. The postwar years initiated a huge increase in population. From 1945 to 1964, the baby boom occurred, which fueled the need for houses. By this time, one-third of the U.S. population lived in suburban areas. With the increase in transportation options and affordable housing, middle-class Americans moved from the cities to suburban areas. Having an increase in the middle class, products became more affordable to purchase. New products were being advertised enhancing the lives of these middle-class people living …show more content…
Like in that time period people today want the newest and exciting product that will allow them to fit into society. With the many technological advancements today, different products are being advertised that entice us. In the 1950’s and 1960’s the products advertised usually dealt more with products that could enhance the home and were more family oriented. Some products advertised back then are still advertised today like coca cola, frosted flakes, and Campbell's soup. Our advertisements today can have a variety of different audiences. Some advertisements are meant for kids to see while other advertisements are not meant for children but for adults. Products advertized back then were mostly meant to entice consumers to purchase products while today some advertisements are made to inform consumers about the negative effects of different products. Many commercials today use fear to scare you into buying a product or staying away from a product. Smoking commercials today unlike in the past can be negative and inform consumers of the negative effects smoking has on the body. Many of the same tactics and products are used today as they were in the past. As mentioned in the video, on a daily basis we are exposed to nearly 1 500 ads a day, and it is evident not all the ads are watched, however they do manage to make it to the back of our heads. So even if we do not pay close attention to what the ad is saying, if the product that was being advertised comes in front of us we still manage to remember that we had seen the product advertisement earlier. The documentary takes a further look at the main reason why ads are made, and the conclusion made is that when products don’t sell, ads are made in the sense, telling their customers they need the product or else they are incomplete. I believe this is a general fact, everyone know that the main needs of any person are, some type of clothes to cover their body, food to eat, water to drink and some sort of shelter. However, when these ads are presented they create an urge in the sense the person believes that have to have the product being advertised. The example given in the documentary was of ageing creams. They are advertised in a way that older aged women feel they have to have the cream or else there is something wrong with them. Another example, is straightening irons, the traditional way of straightening hair is using a hair dryer, or any ordinary straightening iron sold at the store. However, there certain brands advertised in which people believe they are better which is not true. Even though all brands are the same, just because of the ad people believe one is better than the other and that is the only one they want. So when markets say ads sell more than product, concepts, thoughts and values, this is what they refer to. Overall, ads are made in the sense to tell their customers that the product being advertised is a need to them or else they are missing out on something and they are not normal. Many people do…

    Most of us don’t realize how often we really are influenced by advertising or marketing. We wake up, turn the television on, and begin our day. But how would life be if we didn’t have constant commercials or ads blaring at us day in and day out? What if we took it all away from the beginning? Advertising, as a means of production, is used to “announce or praise in some public medium of communication in order to induce people to buy or use it.” However, what is it really used for? We have always been a dignified nation, establishing ourselves as one of the top leaders. But as we grew in strength, our image rapidly changed. The United States has always been a desired place by many; but what made that so? Was it because our Presidents and government were the best? Or was it the land that glorified the nations look? No matter when, the United State has done it’s part to make the nation look great. But why has our image always been so important? I believe it fair to say that advertising is the main culprit. While its intention to create an immediate desired reaction on the consumer was qualified at the beginning, it has evolved into identifying the underlying differences of should and should not. The ethics have been stretched and pulled, just so advertisers could target people properly, by creating an image of “lesser than” unless their product was consumed. The nation as a whole has always remained strong, however individual images have been altered.     Wilks 1 Stephanie Wilks His 1050 Sec 201 April 10, 2010 Roland Marchand and Kelly Schrum: Critical Analysis of Consumerism Post WW II American was a place full of optimism and fear. The American people had survived 20 years of depression and war to find new prosperity and an increase in mass production of goods and services that improved quality of life. This meant better times for Americans, but fears over the Cold War, threat of an evermore intrusive American government and loss of individualism existed as well. These high expectations and anxieties played a great deal into how people consumed. Eventually these factors combined with aggressive advertising marketing, with the help of media (mainly TV), led to the emergence of a whole new market, teenagers. In Roland Marchand 's “Visions of Classlessness” and Kelly Schrum’s “Making the American Girl”, the authors discuss the factors such as, effects of television, mass consumption, and increased income, which led to this new markets and some of the problems that came from it. In “Visions of Classlessness”, the main point that Marchand 's make is that after WW II American people envisioned a society where class was no longer an issue. Everyone would be on an equal level with an equal opportunity to achieve as much as they wanted to. Instead of this “dream of a technological utopia” (Marchand, 102) becoming a reality, “the postwar world bought bureaucratic complexity, cold war insecurity, and a shrunken sense of individual mastery” (Marchand, 98). The constant buying of products by the middle class practically started a competitive economic war in American neighborhoods. The idea of Keeping up with the Joneses, where Americans felt the need to constantly upgrade their appliances, cars, and basically all materialistic posessions drastically shifted middle class economic, and living norms. Specifically, businesses used the suburbia movement as a way to relate with middle class customers. An example of this strategy is Lennox Heating’s 1950 advertisement (Appendix A).
