Alienation and ignorance are two terms that are inseparable when it comes to understanding the real reasons behind the alarming success that ISIS and other religious extremist groups have had when it comes to recruitment. For the Islamic State, ignorance from Western societies is a tool they wield in order to create the situations (through their attacks) needed to generate alienation against the target groups that they see as possible recruits. For example many people would be shocked to find out that 92% of ISIS terrorist attacks victims are Muslims. The soldiers physically carry out the terrorist acts and pay the biggest price, be it death or detention. Without these soldiers, terrorist organisations would crumble. It is therefore important to know more about these foot soldiers, as these individuals sustain the organisation. Without executioners willing to replenish the ranks, men like Osama bin Laden would be nothing more than religious lunatics who few take seriously.
Stereotypes have been part of our society for a while, and we are the cause of it. In our day and age, by establishing stereotypes and following them, we alienate people out for who we think they are; not taking into consideration what they feel, and not bearing in mind the impact this may have on their future as a teenager or adult. We, as human beings, have a tendency to look at people and make quick judgements about them. So far, this stigma has only worked in favor of terrorists organisations, because while we alienate the different minority groups in our neighbourhoods, extremist groups recruit them with the promise of a understanding environment that they don't find in the place they may live.
Bearing in mind what has been mentioned about alienation, it's important that we take religion out of the terrorist equation, not all Muslims are terrorists. Religion does not always correlate with
