Slavery dates back to ancient times in the history of humankind. Slavery is a economic and social system were people were treated like a property, they are sold, bought and forced to work. Through History, slavery has been institutionalized and recognized. People in ancient times can fell into slavery through several ways; the most common were being prisoner of war, or slavery by debt. Moreover, written in this paper it’s going to be seen how Mesopotamia and Egypt have a similarity in the sense that both of this civilizations are a ‘society with slaves’, unlike a ‘slave society, because this civilizations did not have a strong slave ownership based economy. Since the beginning of time, prisoners of war in Egypt would be considered like as a kind of citizen of second or third class, although there is no evidence of that until Middle Kingdom. Still, some of these slaves could achieve positions of trust, and even freedom. Moreover, this forced servants had legal rights, they received a salary and mild good treatment. Bad treatments they were not that common, and when it happended, the slave had the right of claim in court, but only if the punishment was unfair, since Egyptian slaves had acquired certain legal rights. Furthermore, Egyptian slaves received annually products of first necessity, like linen or clothing, plus food and lodging. Moreover, they are testimonies that a slave could get some property, or even operate a business. On the other hand, their masters could punish them, but never kill them, at least theoretically, since only priests can only sentence them to death; all of this was in the conception of the Maat. However, the condition of a slave, particularly those responsible for the toughest jobs, it was still sad. In comparison to others slaves that served in the royal house, or in domestic service of wealthy people, had a more pleasant existence.
