An Essay of Profession
The Military is one of the oldest professions in our country. As a profession of arms, the organization has earned the trust and confidence of the American people. The lethality of our weapons and operations has contributed to its status as a social trustee for the defenseless, in which we provide the security which society cannot provide for itself. To enter the profession of combat arms is to assume a certain kind of social identity. A soldier of respected knowledge and skill, an acknowledged contributor to valued public service, but also as a trustee of the knowledge and skill that define the military. The core purpose of and reason the Army exists today is to apply deadly force in combat and die for what they believe in. No other profession calls for such dedication of its cohorts and for such reasons we as soldiers strive to pursue a life long journey to excel in our vocation and to hone them.

Three key cultural aspects of Army Culture that help Leaders guide the Profession. Professional Identity, “is characterized by an ethos of striving for excellence in functional specialties” (p. 10), as well as putting ones duty before self. Community is a huge factor within the Professional environment of the Army. The climate and the cohesion with soldiers within a unit plays a factor on soldier readiness. A sense of community helps “broaden soldier’s identity by developing the “I” into the “we” (p. 11). This is a fundamental pillar within the army, we are as strong as our weakest soldier, and together nothing is impossible. The Army has a hierarchy, with well-established authority distinctions.
