We also have to take into consideration the power of bystander intervention. There is a bystander training program that teaches “bystanders how to intervene in situations that involve sexual violence, creating a safer environment” (University of New Hampshire). A study suggests that “rates of sexual harassment and stalking victimization and perpetration were lower at a college with a bystander training program than at two colleges without such a program” (Basile). This shows the importance of having students understand that they should intervene if they see someone in danger of being assaulted because seeing and not acting makes them accomplices.
The way of attacking the issue of sexual assault is not prosecuting it, but preventing it in the first place. Awareness alone is incapable of preventing sexual assaults. Institutions need a combination of awareness, bystander intervention, and hands-on physical training to efficiently prevent sexual

Who is going to be teaching students? We are going to have certified professionals trained volunteers from the the Unitarian Universalist Association (the role of this organization will be explained later on) to become certified as well and once those volunteers get certified, they will be teaching other volunteers. Essentially, the program is going to need the help of volunteers, but we will also have certified professionals working full-time in case there are not volunteers available to help.
In terms of measurements, sexual assaults rates might seem to increase in the short-run as a result of students starting to report, but this will allow us to actually track the success of Safeducation in the long-run. Safeducation will also encourage students to report prevented cases so we can also build up a rate of prevented sexual assault incidents. Implementing Safeducation in NYU will help us determine if the program should be expanded to more

    The segment about college dating violence impacted my perception on intimate relationships, but it helped me understand the warning signs and what the states/federal statutes define assault. After reading this article, what particularly enlightened me was various risk and protective factors in dating violence, but very little empirical research on dating violence among a particular age group and education level. The awareness of dating violence among various age groups and to evaluate the effect of these awareness programs. For instance, a presentation on dating violence and ways to help or refer someone if they need assistance. After reading this article and others on dating violence enhanced my understanding of the topic and my personal life because I’m currently a college student. In addition, this better understanding may potentially help me in my job in the criminal justice field. For instance, I may help someone who I know get the assistance he/she needs to get out of that abusive relationship. According to the article, college students have a 10% to 50% chance of experiencing dating violence. (Kaukinen, 2014, p. 284) According to this statistic, approximately half of college students experience dating violence, which can have a negative impact on their well-being and health.
