There are a variety of laws and regulations in relation to the role of the nurse. This essay will be discussing the aspect of Confidentiality and how this may impact nursing in practice and any decision made by a nurse. The official definition of ‘confidentiality’ by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is “‘all nurses must keep information secure and confidential in accordance with the law and ethical and regulatory frameworks, taking account of local protocols” (NMC The Code, 2015). Children’s and adult’s confidentiality differs in many ways as children do not comprehend what information is being disclosed and which may not due to the case the nurse is dealing with. This will go through to their parents or guardian whoever is legally looking after them. The NSPCC establish the urgency of a child’s safeguarding and confidentiality. They ensure that the child acknowledges that their personal information will be treated with respect and with confidentiality (NSPCC,2015). As the preservation of a child is paramount in many situations, especially in severe cases of domestic abuse. As nurse if a child discloses information with you regarding a protection concern, it is your responsibility to notify them of the seriousness of the case you cannot “promise” the child that you will keep it private especially if it is a raising concern of abuse.
