sleep disorders, anxiety. Some may include headache, amnesia, time loss, trances and out of body experiences. Some patients have the tendency toward self-persecution, self-sabotage and even violence. The anecdotes of patients vary one can say that he felt compelled to do it, and other describe as being passenger in their body rather that the driver. They believe they don’t have choice or control over their body. Moreover, research on distinct personalities indicate that the distinct personalities have the role in helping the individual to cope with life’s dilemmas. It’s a psychological response to interpersonal and environmental stresses. Tyler argues that men should feel pain to bring out the true self
I choose this quote because it gives the idea that the narrator is not happy with his life.
“This is your life, and it’s ending one minute at a time, you wake up at Air Harbor International. If you wake up at a different time, in a different place. Could you wake up as different person? (UHLS 19). The first line could mean that we have to know that our life will end no matter what.
We could believe that we have all the time to do amazing things… and we can success in something big. But at the end we all will have the same fade. That we should live everyday as it is the last. Moreover, that we should be the person we want to be. The other part of the quote I believe is the narrator wishing to be someone else. The narrator suffer from insomnia. He has a lot of stress related to his work because he has to see accident in cars that are caused by defective parts in vehicles. His job as recall coordinated is to apply the formula. Which in few words is created to the benefit of the company. He covered that the vehicles has defective parts. This cause him stress and don’t let him sleep. He is not happy about his life and he wants to be another person. Because he fantasizes being another person it’s not surprised that he has another identity. The narrator has thirty years but he looks like a kid. He looks for a way of fight the conflict he has with himself about identity. He try to fill this with buying furniture that according to a catalog define him as a person. This method didn’t work for long. Then he tried to consume experience of people that are near to the death or has a seriously illness. This method help him to release the stress and help him to sleep again. But when Marla start copying him the problem start
again. The quote proves the point that the narrator has conflict of identity. He doesn’t feel part of the society. He hated the job he had. He feels like he is losing the time and can’t do nothing to fix it. He is wishing to be another person and have a solution to his problem. This quote is when he start suspecting that he has another identity and he is suffering from dissociative identity Disorder.
“I was living in a state of perpetual déjà vu. Everywhere I went, I felt I’d already been there. I was like following an invisible man.” (1:49:57) The quote means that the narrator is starting to discover that he might be someone else. He was looking for Tyler Durden, and he went to a many city that he thought he never been there but he felt like he has been there before. He felt like he was one step behind or following an invisible an invisible man. After the death of Bob the narrator wants Tyler to come back and fix the problem that the project mayhem has become. He saw in all other cities a fight club. Apparently, Tyler has been busy creating franchise in other cities. Of course they start as fight club and then convert into project mayhem. The idea of Tyler is to liberate the society of debt. Because according with Tyler consumerism convert society in slaves, destroying individualism and creating a fake ideology of happiness. The narrator doesn’t know that Tyler is his other identity. That Tyler has taken control over him for a lot of time and has created an army, or maybe a cult call project mayhem. That are brainwashed and will obey him in everything. The narrator doesn’t know anything about project mayhem but in every city that he goes they call him sir. They also treated him with respect. The narrator suspects that he might be Tyler Durden but he still in denial until one of the guys in a bar told him that he was there a week ago, and told him Mr. Durden The quotes proves that when people has Dissociative Identity Disorder they could have a lot of proves or ideas. But they will keep in denial because for them is one a method of defense. They don’t want to accept that they have this problems. That when they have the flashback new ideas trigger by the place, season, holiday or anything. They do not remember clearly but the memories are there. This last quote he end denial that he had DID and finally start seeing the things the way they are. Or more like Tyler revealed to him.
“You were looking for a way to change your life, you could not do this on your own. All the ways you could be that’s me. I look like you want look, I fuck like you want to fuck. I’m smart, capable, and most importantly, I’m free in all ways that you are not. (1:53:34) This quote means that Tyler Durden is someone that the mind of the narrator create because the narrator couldn’t handle the situation anymore. The narrator wasn’t happy with his life, his look, his decision. So the mind created Tyler with the personality he wished. The narrator had a conflict of identity. And probably a conflict of sexuality too. In the movie they don’t talk about the childhood of the narrator. The only thing I recall is that he said that Tyler and Marla remind him their parents. Because they could never be in the same room. So from these we know that the narrator had a trauma during his childhood, and this can in fluid in his DID. Tyler is smart and has a plan that according with his idea will liberate the society. It also will cause a chaos. Tyler was able to brainwash the group he created. Everything start with fight club in which the member follow some rules. Feel pain make them feel alive. Then evolve to become a project mayhem. Tyler and the narrator has a very different view of the plan. The narrator seems the death of Bob as big mistake. But Tyler only see this as a collateral damaged Tyler says, “If you want to make omelets, you have to break some eggs”. The way they act and think is very different, also the age they are is different Tyler believe he has twenty five and the narrator thirty, even though they are the same person. We can perceive and have an idea about how people with Dissociative Identity Disorder feel. Basic is like haven two or more different mind in one body. The quote prove the point I wanted to make because people with dissociative identity disorder will not admit that they have a alter identity. In the movie the narrator accept the alter-identity because Tyler tells him and he want to be knowledge. Besides, Tyler has almost finish with his plan and will be almost impossible that the narrator can prevent that for happening. The other point I want to make was the obvious different that Tyler and the narrator are. As Tyler says in the quotations he is the version that the narrator wish to be. But we see that he is beyond of what the narrator would wanted him to be. According with experts we all have experiences mild dissociation like a daydreaming or getting lost in a moment of doing something. But the illness is much more serious. The range of people diagnosed with DID is between 0.01% to 1% of the population and usually they had another mental issues. I believed that we all have talk to ourselves in certain point. We always imagine ourselves winning something or making something interesting. Living in a big house (I hope is not only myself). I can imagine how people could feel when they get diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder. This ill has not cure and from what I read it only get worse, so people who get diagnosed with this denial for years and finally accept their problem. In conclusion, the movie can cover many aspects of living in 1999. It show how the life is. How people get absorbed in ads. They want to be somebody. They believe that buying expensive things they can define themselves. The role of being somebody is getting expensive and valuable things that by the end as Tyler said “The things your own, end up owning you”. It also cover how some people had a conflict of identity. That they are leaving a life that they don’t want and wants a change. People that we see every day and seems happy but internally they are not, they probably hated their jobs and are in a place that they don’t want to be. Wishing be someone else. They are hiding the true self.
