When people think of how Houdini died, they often think his magic tricks and insanely dangerous illusions would have gotten him killed. The public became enticed and nearly obsessed with his illusions that “cheated death.” A 1953 film that starred Tony Curtis caused a whole new generation of people to believe that Houdini’s Chinese water torture cell had gotten the best of him and caused his demise. Houdini’s career is characterized by his desire to be the best. He would practice his illusions repeatedly to the point of perfection wanting to always be better. This obsessive talent created the idea that this illusion would be the death of him; people believed he would beat it or he would die, so when he died, his illusion was easy to blame.

Backstage in his dressing room, a university student, who was also a fan, came backstage to talk to Houdini, after they talked Houdini tried one of his oldest tricks which was to have someone punch him as hard as they could in his stomach or abdomen area. Houdini was believed to be sick prior to this event so he was not a prepared and the punch damaged his appendix. Even though he was in pain, Houdini refused to cancel any of his shows after the event which led to stress on his appendix and must have been the major reason his appendix ruptured.
