This investigation will show how rap and punk music shouldn’t be considered hoodlum music. There is no set definition for a way music is supposed to be. “One of the most difficult art forms to define, music is also one of the most admired art forms.” (Buzzle 2015) Music shouldn’t be looked down upon because mass media has made a mockery of both genres. The problem is that people often denounce the music before even listening to them music. This is important because all forms of music should be respected. The qualitative data I will be using is professional opinions and social constructs while my quantitative data will involve having graphs and data discussing why Rap and Punk shouldn’t be considered hoodlum music.
Introduction
Many issues are circling around the music industry as of now and it involves the critical messages that many of the genres such as Rap and Punk. For example, Tyler, the Creator has been banned from the U.K. “The US rapper says he is not allowed to enter the country for three to five years” because of lyrics he wrote in 2009.” The ban from the U.K …show more content…
isn’t fair as vulgar content does not have anything to do with the subject matter or content. For example, if the UK are going to ban Tyler for his lyrics than they should ban every other form of artistry that included violence. Some of the best forms of art includes violence including art or movies. For example, look at some classic movies such as the “Godfather” or “Taxi Driver” which are considerably some of the best movies which has violent acts. People should be able to look further than though and look at the excellent dialogue and actin and it should be the same way with music. History
Rap has a long history and spreadsheet on the origin on the genre. “Rap dates back to traditional West African story telling that itself predates the development of the slave trade.” (Shenron 2009) In Tribal history drums were banged on and there was stomping that was done in rhythm to the music. Many of the traditions got lost during slave trades but slaves kept on to certain roots that would turn into Jazz. Hip-Hop was at the forefront in New York in 1970 and eventually Rap ended up blending with it to have the genre that exists today. Many of the issues that were involved in Rap was socio-political issues such as racism and much of the music was dominated by references of gangs. In the 1980s most of the Rap that was popular were gangsta rappers such as Ice-T and N.W.A. Many of these songs were controversial such as N.W.A’s song F*ck The Police or “Straight Out of Compton”. In the 1990s there were new rappers that emerged and pushed Rap into mainstream with rappers such as Tupac, Big L, and Notorious B.I.G shook the industry. Rap is full of influences and sampling is a big part of the genre. “Punk Rock was originally used to describe the garage musicians of the 60’s.” (punkmusic 2014) At the beginning bands didn’t really have any real talents and just went withj the flow with bands and was able to bend and mend rules with bands such as the Sonics and later on in the 60s bands like the Stooges and MC5 popped up and talked about many controversial issues. The Velvet Underground was one of the most innovative bands of the time and still is as are considered to be many pioneers of their style in the punk genre. Artists like David Bowie and the New York Dolls contributed to introducing glam rock. In the 1970s in New York concrete bands showed up and bands like The Ramones, Wayne Country, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, and the Talking Heads were all talked about at that time. Later on in the 80s American Hardcore gained popularity with bands such as Black Flag. In the 90s punk was popular, the most popular brand was Green Day and were very mainstream. “It remains to be seen where punk will move toward next, but the fact remains that such as dynamic scene composed of creative and varied individuals isn’t going anywhere soon. Odds are, punk rock will continue to grow and change for many years.” (Cooper 2014)
Problem Statement
Why is there so much discrimination against both of these genres?
Rap and Punk are some of the most definitive and influential in the world. Media hashas blown both of the genre’s sterotypes out of proportion. The effect Rap and Punk has had on the music realm is a great one. One could hear many influences from those genres inside other ones. Some of the most critically acclaimed artists are in both of those genres such as Nas, Jay-Z, Green Day and Nirvana. Many people have the opinion and thoroughly believe that Rap is not music. “Rap is music because it is delivered and consumed in the same way as any other music genre, A rapper does the exact same things any other songwriter does. He or she writes lyrics and decide how them fit together with music.” (March 2007) This topic will be evaluated and thoroughly reviewed due to the help of quantitative and qualitative
research.
Methodology
The materials and equipment that has been used in this research is professional opinions backed by hard evidence, surveys, and statistics that has been collected over time. The samples were collected from that data that was collected when types of music and feedback form them and samples were prepared by putting it in one form. The measurements were made from years opinion on music and the calculations that were performed upon the raw data was performed is things such as stereotypes of it because it hasn’t really been processed for meaningful use. The statistical techniques of this data is that it shows many different types of percent’s and it is very surprising as many of them consist of large numbers. There are many methods that are used for the research paper and it relies more on opinions and suggestions. My topic will be heavily relied more on qualitative data rather than quantitative data.
Data This bar graph talks about how many adult references in is music today. This could possibly affect children or preteens or even teenagers to adults based on subject matter. I don’t believe that there is just drug related references mainly in Gangsta Rap, Rap, and R&B though. There are many other genres which feature drugs and topics such as sex. Some of the main ones being Metal and Punk. With that said though they still shouldn’t be classified as hoodlum music. Many songs has had vulgar content in them and proved to be effective in setting ideas for people such as NWA’s “Straight Out of Compton”. The bar graph is a little bias but again drug-related references doesn’t have to do with anything it all depends on the listener is. "We found no evidence that violent video games increase bullying or delinquent behavior among vulnerable youth with clinically elevated mental health symptoms.” Fergurson (2013) It’s the same way with music it doesn’t make you want to go drugs just because you listen to it. This timeline shows that Rap Music does require talent as there are many unique words used in the genre. Many of the rappers shown use more unique words than classic day poets such as Shakespeare Dick. There are many lyrical rappers such as Common, Wu-Tang Clan, Pusha T, Method Man and etc. So when people such as Jay x Miku x3 says “anyone can rap here even I can.” (League of Legends 2014) that is an ignorant comment. Anybody can try to replicate the genre but that doesn’t mean that success is going to come. This timeline is the perfect example for showing others how Rappers are unique in their own sense.
Summary There were many interesting pieces of information that was found through my researching. The main reason why people call Rap and Punk “hoodlum music is because of the vulgar lyrics. Even though the same is failed to point in many other genres. The research showed that media tends to stereotype and generalize these specific genres more. A lot of people don’t tend to like Rap and says that it requires no instrument and it takes no talent. Even though Rap has contributed a lot to music as a whole people still hold that belief. Something that was instrumental in this research was the amount of negative feedback and opinions given on Rap music. Punk music tends to be generalized almost in a particular fashion such as Rap. Punk music is loud and brash but that doesn’t mean it would make you get up and cause havoc. “Australian researchers Leah Sharman and Genevieve Dingle recently published an article in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience exploring the connection between “extreme music” (e.g., heavy metal, hardcore, punk, and similar genres) and anger. More specifically, they examined whether listening to extreme music causes anger—a concern shared by professionals, teachers, and parents such as my colleague—or whether listening to extreme music helps process and regulate anger. Previous studies were inconclusive, showing on one hand that listening to heavy metal music could increase physiologic arousal (a component associated with an emotion response such as anger) while others concluded that listening to extreme music was a reflection of emotional vulnerability and a mechanism for emotion regulation.” (Moore 2015).
Resolution
The resolution to the problem the topic that involves mine is simple. People need to stop generalizing mass media on a global scale. Representation is everything, and when people se people who sag and wear urban clothing and throws up gang signs and people in skinny jeans and acting edgy for no reason what kind of message is that sending? The resolution to the problem is not very hard at all. People just have to listen intently because u can’t judge a book by its cover. The book actually has to be read a couple of pages first.
Conclusion
In conclusion music as a whole can’t be generalized. Hoodlum music would not be the best title to call neither Rap or Punk. Revolutionary and critically acclaimed would fit much better. Media helps to create false fallacies about both genres. Punk is just being for edgy teenagers who are rebels without causes. Rap is for people who can’t play instruments and just like to wear urban clothing and like to sag and degrade women and do drugs. That’s almost like racism in a sense, it wouldn’t be fair to put one type of quota on one particular group based on stereotypical preconceived notions. Music is an art form no matter what the genres or the artist and it should be treated as such. I believe that most of this negative criticism tends to stem from racism specifically Rap since that genre is predominantly black. When there are artists that talk about selling drugs or having sex they use that as a gateway to criticize when there are many other genres doing the same thing. Rappers and punk groups such as Tupac, Wu Tang Clan, or The Dead Kennedys or Green Day all have messages in their song. It would be ignorant to say that about a whole piece of music as a whole. The potential listener mind to the music is going to be blocked even though the potential could turn out great and Rap and Punk should not be considered hoodlum music.
