The High Priest, Annas, gained his political power by using his wealth to bribe the Roman governors, to appoint his five sons and his son in law to numerous positions in the ruling government. In order to do this, he had to obtain his wealth, by corruption. Since he was a high priest, he controlled the temple and benefited from the Jews payments for an “approved” animal to sacrifice, “When a Jew came to pray at the temple and offer a sacrifice they had to exhange Roman coins for Jewish ones so they could buy “approved” animals to sacrifice” (Jesus and Politics) . The lower class and outcasts addressed the upper class with deference due to wealth and power, but the rich didn’t address the needy with deference, instead they saw them as inferior since they were subordinate. Jesus however, did not view this as acceptable to society, so he aided the poor and the outcasts and viewed them as equal, to break down social barriers.
