Patellar tendonitis occurs when stress is placed on the knee structure through running, jumping and continuous pressure on the knee. It is most often when overused with sports but anyone can be diagnosed with knee tendonitis. According to Houston Methodist "extrinsic factors that are linked with overuse tendon injuries of the knee include inappropriate footwear, training errors and surface or ground being used for the sport or event" (2008). It is important when doing activities to have the correct footwear designated with the sport, this will help lessen the chances of an injury. According to Massachusetts general Hospital Orthopedics "treatment has two objectives: to reduce the inflammation and to allow the tendon to heal." (Page 1). After being diagnosed with this injury the most important thing to do is immediately rest, avoiding putting pressure on the knee and ice and elevate up at least three times a day. Taking an over the counter medicine to reduce pain and inflammation may be advised by your doctor. The next step is physical therapy, if handled properly a full recover can be made in up to six weeks of rest and physical therapy. One of the most important tools to use is measuring your own level of pain, if doing a certain exercise or stretch causes pain immediately stop, it is alright if it causes discomfort but not
