to join together to investigate DMT using strong mixed methods research (MMR) study designs to support the continued growth and development of our field. While quantitative research is generally considered to provide the strongest evidence, DMT lacks strong quantitative research, making it difficult to establish legitimacy in the mainstream social or health science fields. Qualitative research, on the other hand, can feel more meaningful to therapists who value the individual relationships and creative processes inherent in DMT. Combining these in innovative MMR designs will allow researchers to not only provide evidence for the efficacy of DMT but also present in-depth investigations into individuals’ experiences and potential mechanisms and best practices of DMT.
This presentation will consist of a brief overview of quantitative and qualitative research, their combination into the main MMR designs, and practical concerns and challenges in conducting MMR.
We will relate how philosophical perspectives underlying each method can influence the findings and determinations of research quality. We will also present ethical considerations in research including issues surrounding fair representation and conduct of research respectful to individuals from different cultural, racial, and socio-economic groups. The two presenters will briefly present their own MMR studies with an emphasis on the design and research process, as well as a summary of the main findings.
We will finish with a small group activity in which each group will come up with a MMR question and framework for a design to answer this question using the presented overview of MMR and suggestions of issues to consider from the perspectives of qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods researchers. Participants will engage in a movement-based role play to further explore this research question and design.
Participants will understand basic concepts and major designs of mixed methods research.
Participants will be able to identify rationale for using mixed methods research in DMT and challenges to designing and conducting mixed methods research.
Participants will create research questions, outline design possibilities, and identify critical topics for consideration in the creation
of the design.
