Slavery has been a problem for hundreds of years, but it shares many of the same root causes. One of the reasons slaves are preferred to workers is because it is much cheaper to feed a slave than to feed a worker. Workers are also paid more if they are doing dangerous work, but slaves do not have this benefit. This also means that slaves are preferred in dangerous work environments. Slavery is a very profitable business overall, making it attractive to a potential trafficker (Contemporary Slavery). There have always been people trying to make money the easiest way possible, and the same is true today. Slavery has always been about producing something and that has not changed. Materials produced by slaves vary, but there are some main categories. Slaves are often forced to do general labor and many other things. Slavery accounts for one percent of the population in India. That means that for every one hundred people, one is enslaved; this is the highest slavery rate anywhere. The issue is not just in India, though. China and Pakistan also have high rates of slavery (Contemporary Slavery). Countries with the most unstable governments or corrupt rule are the most common places to find slavery, however, there are things being done to stop modern day slavery. There have always been people who fight slavery and that's no different today. Many countries are passing protection acts to help stop human trafficking. One example is the Trafficking Victims Protection Act that the United States passed. This act prohibits sex and labor trafficking.
