I saw that summarizing was helpful to the patients because it validate their feelings that they were having and it help the patients know that the nurse understood what was said. Restating seems to be helpful that I saw because it if the patient seem to be having a hard time understanding what the nurse had just asked the nurse would ask the same question in a different way so that the patient can understand. One non therapeutic technique that I saw over and over again was the nurses talking about the patient and laughing some of the time when the patient was right there in the room. I thought this was non therapeutic because the patient may feel like they are being made fun of and in return maybe they will not share as much or not share at all with the nurse. Maybe the nurses don’t mean to be laughing or maybe they are not even laughing about the patient but they should watch their nonverbal behaviors. A way I can advocate for a patient who is the recipient of non-therapeutic communication techniques is that if I see a nurse or a doctor or any health care personnel talking to a patient is to talk to the individual that I saw and pull them aside and let them know what they are portraying to the patient so that the patient can get the best help
