A patient under stress from being in the hospital or dealing with a health problem can be very closed off. They can be mad at everyone which causes miscommunication between the nurses and themselves. It is important for nurses to know how to deal with patients that are under stress because stress does indeed lead to bigger problems.

There are many ways to communicate with patients who are under stress. One stress reduction strategy that can lead to good communication is “giving information” (Arnold, 2016). Providing general information about a procedure, treatment, medication, or facts about a disease can help reduce the patient’s stress. This also helps the patient gain confidence which makes them more comfortable to communicate to the nurses. Another way to help communication with a stress patient is being assertive as a nurse. Being assertive as a nurse encourages the nurse to understand how the patient is feeling and respect their beliefs (Mayo Clinic, 2015). An assertive nurse will have high self-esteem and will know how to speak to a patient that way the patient opens up and vents to the nurse.
