different pharmacists involvement in the hospital settings. My second goal is to achieve a better connection with both my academic and professional mentors, by setting up 2 meeting points from February 15 to May 1, 2016 to discuss more in detail about the profession, opportunities of leadership and obtain a better sense on their roles in pharmacy.
One of the reasons I choose to achieve both goals is because I really want to make sure that by the end of this spring semester I have the necessary understanding on the roles and involvement of a pharmacist in different settings, both in the hospital as well as an academic pharmacist.
As I am in the hospital shadowing I will be able too see the pharmacist in action providing care to a patient, I will learn counseling techniques, I will be able to ask them the necessary questions, including their academic trajectory, among other important aspects. This will give me a sense or a brief overview on what to expect if I where to work in this area. I should also see the level of education need to achieve in order to get such position. So this is one of the main aspects on why these goals are important for me. The second and most important aspect to me is being able to connect better with both my professional and academic mentor. They are our guidance and it is important to reach to them frequently, to show you are engaged, interested in learning and in solidifying that professional relationship, which would lead to a stronger professional network. I realize that I have not been very active in this area in particular and therefore, I plan to start taking action to achieve this outcome every
semester.
As I mention before I plan to engage as much as possible in every rotation I have been assigned to, specially those in hospital settings. Throughout the hospital rotations, I plan to take the extra mile and network with different healthcare professionals to find ways where I could potentially volunteer as a student pharmacist. Some volunteering options I am looking forward could be helping pharmacist do medication reconciliation, or any other task where I can become involved, be a leader and advocate for our profession. I also plan to ask my two mentors for any opportunities they might know of where I can potentially volunteer and help others in the community. All of these experiences will prepare me, as pharmacist to be, with the basic and proper knowledge. Also, I will gain a better sense of time management, since I will learn how to balance academics with extracurricular volunteering opportunities and leadership positions.
