Medical marijuana is not the same as street marijuana, which is highly believed among the people who I have talked to about this subject. Now, I cannot speak for everyone in this state, so do not take this as a “state-wide” opinion. While street marijuana is very mind altering and highly addictive, medical marijuana is made from “whole unprocessed marijuana plants or its basic extracts to treat a disease or symptom”. The chemicals, cannabinoids, specifically THC and CBD, found in these unprocessed marijuana plants has led to two FDA-approved medications in pill form. THC, the mind-altering component to marijuana, although mind-altering, does have its perks. It can be used as an anti-nausea or appetite reducing medication and also can aid with inflammation and muscle problems. CBD, is not mind or behavior altering and aids in reducing inflammation and pain, controlling epileptic seizures, and some mental illnesses. Medical marijuana can be dispensed in many forms such as oils, inhalants, and pill form including suppositories. Now, like everything else, medical marijuana does have its cons to its pros. Majority of the cons I’ve found when researching the topic has been its harm…

Cannabis is the main ingredient in marijuana. The National institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reported that its effect on the body is just like any other natural made chemical in the body. The benefits range from treating simple headache to slowing down cancer cells. Drugs sold over the counter are more dangerous than marijuana yet those drugs are approved and are sold. Donald Abrams, chief of hematology-oncology at San Francisco general hospital, has done more research on marijuana than anyone in the United States (Weil, 127). He concluded in his research that inhaling cannabis can help reduce pain associated with nerve damage and can also increase effect of opiate pain relievers as well help patients sleep. This is greatly important because of how tough nerve damage can be on a person. They are usually recommended to use over the counter pain relief pills but if marijuana is stronger in relieving pain as well as helping them sleep more calmly why would anyone decline. Another usage for marijuana is that the cannabinoids have an ability to relieve chronic pain which included nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy (Park). Whether cannabis use should be legalized has been always a controversial topic in worldwide. The supporters of legalization of cannabis use believes the health damages that caused by cannabis are less than those associate with cigarettes; as a result, if production and sale of cigarettes is legal, why cannabis use cannot be legalized? In addition, supporters believe the legalization of cannabis use can save government’s law enforcement funds and crack down smuggling of cannabis effectively; furthermore, governments can earn more tax revenue as well. On the other hand, opponents say that since cannabis is a kind of new-born drug, the physical damages that caused by using cannabis need to be studied further, in addition, the legalization of cannabis can cause many social problems because people who use cannabis are more likely to be out of control of their minds. Also, opponents believe that using cannabis can become an incentive of using harder drugs. With the recent legalization of cannabis in Colorado and Washington legalization, the existing drug prohibition was shaken. Based on two major factors, health and economy, whether cannabis use should be legalized becomes more and more controversial.…
