First, this story was set at a time in the past. Second, his story was very well written and has many over the top characters. Third, his story has many mysterious, magical events and the aftereffects of them. Also, his story is not real, it is fiction, and is a myth. (A myth is a traditional story, especially one concerning the early history of people or culture and typically involving supernatural beings or events.)
“Rip Van Winkle” is set at a isolated place during the control of George the Third. It’s set in a small town, near the Kaatskill Mountains. There was a little bit of smoke coming up from the village and at the foot of the mountains, lingering among the trees. It was noticed and founded by a few of the Dutch colonists, who settled during that time. This was also during the unite of old England. The setting impacted this story greatly, it puts a person’s mind in the place of the story and into a very mythical place.
There are quite a few characters in the story “Rip Van Winkle”. Most of which are pretty odd and somewhat weird. I personally think the Rip Van Winkle was one of the strangest …show more content…
characters, he seemed to stand out the most out of all the other characters. He, like many of the other characters, is very odd. He was described in a silly, playful manner. He was described as lazy, but kind and helpful. In one of the scenes of the story, he helps some children play a game of marbles, which shows the age of the story. (Hardly anyone uses marbles nowadays.) In another scene, Van Winkle meets a few men on one of the mountains. As you may have guessed, they were pretty peculiar too. They even had a magical liquor. But, even if they were strange, they still had a big impact on the story as well.
“Rip Van Winkle” had many scenes that were magical, mythical, and miraculous.
I think the main scene though, had to deal with Van Winkle himself. It was started when his wife was nagging at him continuously. He eventually got fed up with her and her nagging, so he left. He then goes on a long walk and eventually gets to the mountains where he meets some very odd men and drinks their magical liquor. What Van Winkle didn’t know was that this magical liquor was going to put him in a deep sleep for twenty years. During these twenty years, he misses a lot of important events. He misses his wife’s death, his dog’s death, his neighbor’s death, and his child’s and grandchild’s growth. As said earlier, a lot of the events and aftereffects play a big role in this story. This scene shows
that.
Overall, I would say that “Rip Van Winkle” is a wonderful story and I recommend others to read it. Although it was a myth, Irving was still able to incorporate three main characteristics into it. (The characteristics being: interesting characteristics, magical events, and are set in exciting times in the past). I think Irving did a fantastic job in writing this story and was able to use all of these characteristics in it. I think that him using these characteristics impacted the story and the experience of the reader very greatly. Washington Irving is a great author.
