Throughout the lifespan, there are many times where a person’s role changes. Role change could either involve adding a new role, dropping an old role, or modifying an existing role and making it better (Harrington & Terry, 2013, p. 36). Change in a role is defined as a role transition, in which a person changes their behavior and adapts to a new role or modifying their current role. Nursing is a profession where transition often happens because nurses adapt to different roles in their practice and they expand their knowledge which makes them more self-confidence in their role. The nursing transition is considered a central concept because it involves adaption, self-care, unitary human development, expanding consciousness, and also human becoming (Meleis & Trangenstein, 1994, p. 66). An experience which I want to share in which I felt that I needed guidance from a RN in order to resolve a situation. I had a patient whose condition was deteriorating as he was not taking his medication for a past few weeks and also he refused to eat. The patient’s daughter, who was the power of attorney, came to facility daily to feed her father during meal times. So one day I was working on the unit, there was an interdisciplinary meeting held to discuss the patient’s deteriorating condition and also discussed palliative care. So after the meeting, I took the initiative to talk to the patient’s daughter regarding palliative care when she came to the facility. The daughter became very upset and denied that her father should be put on palliative care. So the RN on duty informed me that she will talk to the daughter.
