Simon had become a peacekeeper while helping Ralph sort out the ways the boys would survive while on the shore of the island since they were stuck there with no adult. He is facing a similar external conflict to the other boys because they’re stranded on an island with no help, but he thinks about trying to help Ralph with keeping things in order and trying to get rescued. In chapter one, Simon goes with Ralph and Jack to look around and try to find what could help them. When they find something in the creepers he describes them as being, “Like candles. Candle bushes. Candle buds.” (Golding 30). He points out the beauty in everything when the boys do not see it and tried to do that so the civilization could stay.

In his haze, he talks to the head of the pig that Jack and his “tribe” staked to “feed” the beast. Simon was always ill, but none of the boys acknowledged it, they just looked at him as different. When he’s alone, he uncovers the actual entity taking over the boys and trying to get into their heads, which is the evil inside them.
