Slave codes are sets of rules used to keep slaves under control and to stop slave rebellions. Slave codes were created because the number of slaves was rising and fast and the whites were scared of a rebellion. Slaves had rebelled before but because of the numbers going up they thought they could not stop the next rebellion. Then the slave codes were created. Slaves got very little food, water, and sleep. The slaves worked sometimes days without stopping. Slave codes were different from state to state. There were many things that ran through slave codes like slaves can own weapons. Slave’s houses were subject to search. Slaves were not allowed to meet without a white male present. But slave codes were very different in one state you could not return to the state that you were enslaved in. The slaves had to be whipped if they were missing for a certain amount of days. Slaves were not allowed to testify in court. Slaves could not raise a hand against a white man even for self-defense. White men could not be punished for doing anything to a slave. If any white man did not follow the slave code then they would be fined and forfeit ownership of their
