Does Solitary Confinement Violate Our Rights as a citizen? There is a lot of controversy about if solitary confinement be cruel and unusual punishment? So does solitary confinement violate our rights as an American citizen? Solitary Confinement is when an inmate is placed in a cell by themselves with no contact with other except with guards. The cells are usually very small and they stay in their cell for 22 to 23 hours a day .Solitary confinement is a violation of the 8th amendment ban against cruel and unusual punishment because it inmates are more likely to hurt or kill themselves , it causes brain damage and inmates are denied of basic needs .

We are social animals we are build for interaction and take that away and inmates lose their minds.” With no human interaction solitary confinement can cause brain damage. What the government is taking away from people they can never receive it back. They might be able to get back their families,friends,money house and homes but you can never get back that part of your brain that you damaged.This is another reason why solitary confinement violates our 8th amendments.

They are denied basic needs like from showers and medical attention The guards are not following their end of the law. These inmates are treated like slaves because they made one big or small in their lives. This is the final reason to why solitary confinement is cruel and unusual
