Whether it be owning a big house, having a nice car, or getting the latest iPhone, the desire for the latest and greatest has always been an underlying part of the American Dream (Khurram). In the 20’s, it was the radio, and today it’s the newest phone or computer. No matter which way you look at it, there has always been this materialistic part to the American Dream.
While many people may argue how the American Dream has to change with each generation to keep up with the times, the basic categories of the dream stay the same (Gillon). It is obvious that from the beginning of the American Dream to now, there have been significant changes to the desires of Americans, however all of these parts tend to fall into the categories of a better life, equality, or a materialistic want.
Equality has continued to be a major part of the American Dream, giving many minorities in the country the desire to be as respected as everyone else with the same basic human rights. Whether it was the issue of racial inequality at the beginning of the American Dream, or being the inequality regarding gender and sexual orientation today, there has always been the desire for equal rights and respect throughout the turn of the century
