The American Dream: Poor Immigrants
The origin of The American Dream began with the poor immigrants looking for opportunities. The Declaration of independence states “all man are created equal and that they are endowed with certain unalienable rights among which are life, liberty and persuit of happines.”(The Declaration of Independence). The American Dream is different for every individual you come across. To some people it means financial success, to other people it means freedom of expression, while other people want to practice their religion without fear. The American Dream is a complex concept providing immigrants with hope of better life. The promise of it has convinced millions of people that, as a citizen of this country, you can do anything if you work hard
enough. Whether you want to be an actor athlete or even president those things should be accomplished regardless of your class or race! America is the nation where dreams can come true. Unfortunately, for a large number of people that believe this, it does not apply to them. Many Americans find opportunities are denied to them because of their race. Others are most likely living in poverty far from the American Dream they desire. "Many people think that the American Dream is something few can achieve: excessive material wealth like that of professional athletes and movie stars."( For most people now it's all about the money. People don't care about owning land so that their kids are guaranteed a part of it later in life. People want to show off their money “Our American Dream today is to have money, everyone wants to be a millionaire. Everyone wants to have the fastest car or the biggest nicest house.” (How has the American Dream changed over time?) If this is how people define the American Dream then only a few citizens are categorized as living The American Dream. A variety of Americans would define the American Dream as living the ideal life of getting a good education, using that education to get a nicely paid job, becoming somewhat wealthy because of that job, and being able to live your life doing what you love most. Judging by the survey taken, “Somewhat surprisingly, less than half of all Americans surveyed by the banking giant (43%) say they believe in the American Dream. Another 29% say they are not sure and another 29% say they do not believe in it.”(5 Ways Americans Define the American Dream) More than half of Americans are either not sure or do not believe in the American Dream.
