Utopia or Dystopia
Imagine a place without hunger, fear, pain, or fighting; that is a utopia. A utopia is an idea of a perfect society without faults or blemishes. Now imagine a world that is filled with pain, starvation, terror, and war; that is a dystopia. A dystopia is an idea of an unpleasant and disaster filled society. The Community in The Giver is a utopia because they want to keep people safe from war,make sure everyone can have food,and keep them safe from illnesses and pain.
The community in The Giver wants to keep residents safe from wars so they do not become injured, or killed. In the book it states“… he lay there in the fearsome stench for hours, listened to the men and animals die….( Lowry 151)” The war killed all of these men and animals and the Community did not want this to happen to any others after the war was over. So they had everyone describe their feelings out loud to others instead having the people bottle the anger or pain inside.If feelings are bottled in too long they cause strong rage that leads to fighting and ultimately war. The sentence from the Giver is of starvation and neglect.” … the hunger had caused excruciating spasms in his empty, distended stomach.( Lowry 139)” After the Giver shared this experience with the Community, it was decided that there would need to be control over food so the starvation didn't happen again. “Excruciating hunger and starvation. It was followed by warfare.(Lowry 141).” There would be no deaths or glimpses of death by hunger. The controlled birth rate was put in place so no one would be fighting for food. With the controlled birth rate rule, that there should only be two children per family no one will feel this pain and hunger, there were less mouths to feed so everyone was big and strong. The bigger and stronger they were, the more food grown and work was
