An analysis of perpetuality in politics
2300 years ago, Aristotle wrote about the importance of character to persuade in his book Rhetoric, writing, “We believe good men more fully and more readily than others: this is true generally whatever the question is, and absolutely true where exact certainty is impossible and opinions are divided” (181-182). This has been proven true since then, particularly in politics, where certainty is impossible and opinions are extremely divided. This importance of character in politics is demonstrated in a September 16th 2016 speech by first lady Michelle Obama where she endorses Hillary Clinton for president and condemns Donald Trump for the same role based on their respective characters and characteristics. Obama believes this to be an effective distinguishment between effective and ineffective candidates for the position as she believes that one’s character maintains constant, saying: “the presidency doesn’t change who you are, it reveals who you are”.

Obama says that, “We know that Hillary’s the right person because we’ve seen her character and commitment, not just on the trail, but over the course of her entire life”, which establishes her perpetual, committed character. Then, Obama lists some of Clinton’s accomplishments while continuing the theme of perpetuality. Obama says that, “when [Hillary] didn’t win the presidency in 2008, she didn’t throw in the towel” and “Hillary has the resilience that it takes to do this job […] when she gets knocked down, she doesn’t complain or cry foul.
